[Opening
scene - Haddie dyes her hair black in the bathroom and smiles as she puts on
dark lipstick.]
[New Scene - Kitchen, Adam is making Max a sandwich.]
MAX: Dad, that's not, that's not how you do it. That's not…
ADAM: Oh, excuse me…
MAX: The cream cheese has to get on the, no, no…
ADAM: …I think I know my way around a cream cheese and jelly sandwich.
MAX: You should watch mom do it.
KRISTINA: I'll do it.
ADAM: Okay, school me.
MAX: You have to, you could learn from her.
ADAM: I will watch and learn.
MAX: Learn from her.
[Haddie enters the room, Adam notices the new look.]
KRISTINA: Wait. This way.
MAX: Watch mommy make it. You can learn from her.
KRISTINA: See, watch this.
ADAM: Honey.
KRISTINA: Watch this.
ADAM: Hey, hey.
KRISTINA: That's how I just stretch it all around. [Seeing Haddie's new look.]
Oh, my God.
HADDIE: Did something happen?
ADAM: What did you do to your hair?
HADDIE: Nothing. It's not a big deal, okay.
KRISTINA: Honey, is that permanent?
MAX: It looks like a panther or, like…
HADDIE: I'm going to school. Um, and I'm taking the bus to school today and I'm
late, so I have to go.
ADAM: Uh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold on a second.
KRISTINA: Honey, your hair is black.
MAX: It kind of also looks like a, she looks like a vampire from Twilight.
ADAM: Did you know about this?
KRISTINA: I didn't, no. I didn't tell her it was okay to do that.
MAX: I like it.
[New Scene - Braverman house, down stairs.]
DREW: Mom, I'm dead without this biology homework, seriously.
SARAH: I know, we'll find it. [To Amber.] Hey, that was the school. Uh, have
you been cutting class?
AMBER: What? That's crazy.
SARAH: Yeah, so where are you going now?
AMBER: Uh, just going to school, of course. Every day, like a good child.
SARAH: Really?
AMBER: [Laughing] Yeah.
SARAH: Are you sure?
AMBER: Yeah.
DREW: Amber, have you seen my homework?
AMBER: Nope. Sorry.
SARAH: Are you cutting, [Amber closes the door.] okay, bye.
CAMILLE: It's definitely not in the kitchen.
SARAH: Okay. Yeah.
CAMILLE: You know what? I saw a bunch of papers on the sideboard.
DREW: Seriously.
SARAH: Uh-huh, I looked there, mom. Oh, I got it, I got it.
DREW: Are you serious?
SARAH: I looked here a thousand times.
DREW: Where did you find it?
SARAH: It was just under that notebook. I looked there a million times. What's
that? Baseball?
DREW: Yeah.
SARAH: You trying out for baseball?
DREW: I don't know. I mean, yeah, prob… I don't know. I was thinking about it.
SARAH: You were? I think that's a great idea.
DREW: Yeah?
SARAH: Yeah.
DREW: Well, I mean, maybe I'll ask Uncle Adam to help me, like, train for it.
SARAH: Uh…
DREW: What? Bad idea?
SARAH: No. I'll call him.
DREW: Okay. All right. We need to go. Come on.
[New Scene - Crosby's houseboat, he's making waffles.]
CROSBY: [To Jabbar.] Look at that. Mm.
JASMINE: [On the phone.] Yes. Yes. Yes. Mm-hmm.
CROSBY: [To Jabbar.] Look at this, it's raining.
JABBAR: Oh, yeah.
JASMINE: I'll be there.
CROSBY: Is that enough?
JABBAR: Nope.
JASMINE: No.
CROSBY: Nope. Okay.
JASMINE: Don't, don't worry about it at all. Yes, I'll, I'll be there. Mm-hmm.
No, don't worry about it. Okay? Bye. [To Crosby and Jabbar.] I'm in.
CROSBY: Come on!
JASMINE: I'm in Alvin Ailey!
CROSBY: I knew you'd do it.
[Crosby and Jasmine hug.]
JABBAR: Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!
CROSBY: Look at this.
JASMINE: [To Jabbar.] Now, give me a hug. Yay. [Kissing him.] Mwah.
CROSBY: Oh, I'm so proud of you.
JABBAR: Chicka bow bow…
JASMINE: I can't believe it! [Still excited.] Ah!
CROSBY: Wow. So...New York.
JASMINE: Yes. It means New York.
CROSBY: And, um, when do you have to go?
JASMINE: Uh, they want me there, uh, right away.
CROSBY: Uh, right away when right away?
JASMINE: Like Friday.
CROSBY: Friday?
[The bell rings and Zeek opens the front door.]
ZEEK: Hey. I'm moving in… Bad time?
JABBAR: Grandpa!
ZEEK: Hey, Jabbar. Oh, man. [Picks him up.] Oh, jeez, you're heavy.
[New Scene - Kristina answers her front door.]
KRISTINA: Coming. [the latch won't open for a moment.] This door...
SARAH: Hey. I was just looking for Adam, just real quick.
KRISTINA: Sure. [Turns away.] Hey, Adam, honey?
ADAM: [From the other room.] Yeah?
SARAH: [To herself.] Sure, I'd love to come in.
ADAM: [From the other room.] What?
SARAH: [To Herself.] Come on in.
KRISTINA: Honey, your sister's here.
ADAM: Which one?
KRISTINA: The old one.
SARAH: Hey, are you…
ADAM: Hey.
SARAH: Oh, hi.
ADAM: Just headed out the door.
SARAH: Oh, sorry. I just wanted to show you this. It was in Drew's, um,
homework…
ADAM: Hey, that was my league.
SARAH: I know. And he asked about you helping him for tryouts. And I think he's
kind of nervous about it. But, um, I just was excited for him, you know, to see
him get interested in something, so I didn't know if…
KRISTINA: [Interrupting.] Adam, can you open that? I can't open that.
SARAH: I know you guys are busy. Oh, what do you got, that easy clean? I love
that stuff. It really gets out all the, uh, okay. So…
ADAM: It's not a problem, okay?
SARAH: Thank you. Thanks, Kristina.
KRISTINA: Mm-hmm.
SARAH: Great seeing you guys.
ADAM: All right.
SARAH: Sorry.
ADAM: Tell Drew I'm looking forward to it…
SARAH: Okay?
ADAM: Just tell Drew.
SARAH: I will.
[Sarah gets out of the house quickly after the frosty reception from Kristina,
Backing out the drive she hits Adam's car. Thinking twice she makes a run for
it without leaving a note.]
[Opening credits - featuring “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan]
[New Scene - Amber's school, library.]
MARK: Hi.
SARAH: Hi. How are you?
MARK: I'm okay.
SARAH: I just wanted to talk to you about Amber.
MARK: Um, yes. I... I know she missed the last couple of days. I was gonna call
you.
SARAH: I just feel worried about her and wanted to ask you, 'cause she does so
well with you. You know, I don't want her to, um...unravel.
MARK: How are, how are you doing with all this? I mean, it can't be easy.
SARAH: No, it's, um... You know, it's just all made me think that, I think
coming here might have been a mistake. Um, it was a mess where we were, but it
didn't affect so many people and it didn't disrupt the family. I think we're
better on our own, and so... We should move on and... make a mess someplace
new.
MARK: Okay.
SARAH: Think that's actually what I came to tell you today. 'Cause... 'cause I
missed your face. So... [She starts to walk away.]
MARK: Uh, Sarah, um... Sarah, look. For what it's worth, I, I... I don't think
that running away from your problems is, is the answer. I think that you're
doing a great job with Amber. I think you're an incredible mother, and I think
she's gonna do just fine here, and, um, I don't think that you should leave.
Please don't leave.
[New Scene - Crosby's houseboat.]
CROSBY: Oh, wow. This coat's screaming chick magnet to me. Isn't that cool Max
gave you all this stuff?
JABBAR: Yep. Does it always rain in New York?
CROSBY: Well, not always.
JABBAR: I don't think I'm gonna like it.
CROSBY: Oh, you're gonna love it. It's the greatest city in the world.
JABBAR: Do they have bagels like at Bagel City?
CROSBY: Do they have bagels? Dude, New York has the best bagels anywhere.
They're hot and fresh and you can smell them everywhere on the streets. You're
gonna be smiling all day long.
JABBAR: So how come I call you Crosby?
CROSBY: What do you mean?
JABBAR: I could call you daddy. Right?
CROSBY: Yeah, of course. I mean, it's up to you, but I would like that.
JABBAR: Okay.
CROSBY: Oh, okay. How about we go tackle this city, just a couple of dudes in
search of a science center and some pizza. What do you say?
JABBAR: Oh, yeah.
CROSBY: Yeah.
[New Scene - Kristina and Adam at home talking to Haddie.]
KRISTINA: I just don't understand it. We, we want to understand why you did it.
That's all. I'm just asking that.
HADDIE: And I keep telling you, there's nothing to understand.
KRISTINA: Something I've never seen before.
ADAM: I think your mother's just concerned that you're trying to be somebody
you're not.
KRISTINA: Exactly.
HADDIE: Well, don't worry.
KRISTINA: We got a call from school today. You ditched chemistry. You've never
ditched a class before, Haddie. Ever.
ADAM: Why did you ditch chem?
HADDIE: We weren't doing anything.
KRISTINA: Are Amber and Steve in your class?
HADDIE: Is everything that I do now gonna be defined by Amber and Steve?
KRISTINA: Is that why you did it? This has nothing to do with Amber and Steve,
then. Nothing at all?
HADDIE: You know what? No, it doesn't. And even if it did, you don't get to act
like you know everything about me.
KRISTINA: I was your age once, and I've been through this stuff before.
HADDIE: I just wanted to dye my hair because I don't like my hair color, okay?
ADAM: Okay.
KRISTINA: Okay, that's fine.
HADDIE: Thank you. Can I go?
KRISTINA: That's fair.
ADAM: Okay.
KRISTINA: Honey, I, I can't believe that this is happening. Like, what is going
on here?
ADAM: What, what do you think is going on here?
KRISTINA: She's just completely shut down. I mean, she's dying her hair black.
I don't recognize her literally.
ADAM: She's very bright. I think she's gonna be just fine. She's just a
teenager. She's going through some growing pains.
KRISTINA: How do you know that…
ADAM: I don't know that but she seams like she's gonna to but fine.
KRISTINA: How do you know that? She's a teenage girl. You don't know what
teenage girls go though, okay? I was one.
ADAM: No, I don't, okay? I admit that I don't, but I think that she's gonna be
fine, okay. Now listen. I'm gonna, I'm gonna be late for Drew. Okay? I have to
go meet him.
KRISTINA: What? Late for Drew? Why?
ADAM: Yeah, I promised him I'd help him with his baseball tryouts.
KRISTINA: [Sarcastically] Oh. That's so awesome, honey. Really? Why don't you
focus on our family right now? I'm just saying.
[New Scene - Braverman house, attic art studio.]
CAMILLE: Hey.
SARAH: Hi. [Looking at the painting.] Uh, nice sky. Mom, I don't know what's
exactly, uh, what's going on, you know, right now with you and dad or that guy
Matthew, not that it's any of my business.
CAMILLE: Well, um, it kind of isn't your business, but, um, nothing's going on
and I told him, uh, that's not happening anymore.
SARAH: Okay. I don't know. Dad just said he was at the house, so…
CAMILLE: That's the thing about your father. He talks to everybody but me.
SARAH: Look, uh, Julia's having that guy Timm over to her house for dinner to
talk to dad about the property. I think you should be there too.
CAMILLE: Well, I should be there. But why didn't he invite me? You see? That's
what I'm talking about.
SARAH: I don't know, mom. If you sit around waiting for him to invite you or
call you or tell you what to do, you could be waiting forever. I mean, don't be
a victim, you know? Just...do something. You don't need an invitation to your
own life.
CAMILLE: You are absolutely right.
SARAH: Thank you.
CAMILLE: And I'm really glad I taught you that.
[New Scene - Crosby's boat, night. Zeek and Crosby are drinking and singing at
the piano.]
ZEEK: [Singing] …good hearted woman‚ in love with a good timin' man, she loves
him in spite of his wicked ways‚ but she don't understand.
CROSBY: Oh, my God, the piano's breaking. You got your sea legs now, right?
Your skin looks great out here.
ZEEK: Thank you.
CROSBY: And your hair's got kind of some body now, that salt air. [Singing
again the end of a song.] Thank you very much. [Downing a shot.] Ah!
ZEEK: I could not get Adam to drink one beer with me…
CROSBY: No way. If he drinks too much, the stick might fall out of his ass.
[Zeek laughs.] [Taking another drink.] That's the good stuff.
ZEEK: Wait a minute. [Also drinking.] Ah! This is what it's all about. It was
nice like this in, in Saigon. There was this cute little thing, and she had the
tightest little…
CROSBY: Mm! Dad, I don't need to know all the details.
ZEEK: Oh, my God,
CROSBY: I'm feeling so sick!
ZEEK: [Singing] With a truck drivin' man, ah!
CROSBY: Yeah!
ZEEK: Oh, that's it. Whoo!
CROSBY: You want another beer, or are you gonna. You liquor or for a beer?
ZEEK: I don't even know what I'm saying half the time these days.
CROSBY: Huh?
ZEEK: Nothing. Your mother's gonna forgive me, you know. She's got to.
CROSBY: Yeah, this thing's gonna blow over, right? I mean…
ZEEK: Hell, yeah.
CROSBY: Julia'll fix all the real estate stuff, and then you'll be right back.
ZEEK: You know... Crosby, this whole thing here with Jasmine going to New York
and taking Jabbar, you can't let that…
CROSBY: Mmm.
ZEEK: …you gotta put your foot down. She can't be taking your son away…
CROSBY: Dad, I don't think you understand the whole story, cause…
ZEEK: They've got dance troupes here. I don't get it. I mean…
CROSBY: What do you know about dancing? You don't know anything about dancing.
ZEEK: I'll tell you one thing I do know, Crosby. You gotta be there for your
kid. He's your son. And you can't let him slip away from you. You have to man
up here, Crosby.
[New Scene - Diner, next morning.]
CROSBY: You remember Andrea Sokolov? You remember her? She dyed her hair black
my junior year.
JULIA: Oh, right.
CROSBY: And then she turned into a tigress, like, overnight.
JULIA: Overnight.
ADAM: Well, thanks for that.
JULIA: What does that mean?
CROSBY: She's was open for business. That was what that signified.
JULIA: Oh, God.
SARAH: It's a teenage thing. There's a lot worse things she could be doing.
JULIA: No, it's entirely innocuous. It's, it's a phase, right?
ADAM: She's gonna grow out of it.
CROSBY: Well, tell that to Andrea's parents. She's riding a pole at the strip
club by the bowling alley.
JULIA: That's true.
CROSBY: You need to get her hair back to its natural color.
SARAH: Or she's gonna become a stripper.
ADAM: Seriously?
JULIA: Hey, what happened to your taillight?
ADAM: I don't know, some guy must have just smacked into it. Just drove off,
didn't leave a note, nothing.
SARAH: That's unconscionable.
CROSBY: Yeah, society's coming apart at the seams.
SARAH: Hey…
ADAM: Hey, you know what? It is unconscionable, because how difficult is it to
take responsibility for your actions, you know? You bust somebody's taillight,
step up to the plate.
CROSBY: Anybody could do that.
JULIA: You okay?
CROSBY: No.
SARAH: What's wrong with you?
CROSBY: Mm. I was drinking last night with Zeek.
SARAH: Zeek? They've both gone insane.
ADAM: Just you and dad?
CROSBY: Bottomless pit.
JULIA: Wait, okay, what's happening with mom and dad? 'Cause I was at the house
yesterday. She was very weird. She was very negative about them getting back
together. I don't understand what she's so upset about.
CROSBY: Yeah, it feels like there's something else.
[Julia notices how Adam and Sarah are acting.]
JULIA: [To Crosby.] Are you catching this? [To Adam and Sarah.] Hey, guys.
CROSBY: What was that look?
JULIA: With the secret…
CROSBY: Do you guys have a secret or something?
SARAH: Go ahead.
CROSBY: Huh?
ADAM: Dad had an affair.
JULIA: What?
CROSBY: Come on.
ADAM: I wouldn't joke about that.
SARAH: Shh, Crosby.
CROSBY: Dad had an affair?
ADAM: We're not screwing with you. I wouldn't lie about this, okay? It happened
many years ago.
CROSBY: I cannot believe he did that to her.
SARAH: I know.
ADAM: By the way, I'm sorry, but I can't practice with Drew tonight.
SARAH: Why not?
ADAM: Kristina, I've got stuff to do at the house.
SARAH: No, no, you know what…
ADAM: Just try and keep the peace, all right?
SARAH: Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it.
ADAM: Sorry.
SARAH: No. I'm sorry.
[New Scene - Braverman yard, Sarah is trying to throw a baseball to Drew.]
SARAH: Woo!
DREW: Mom, I can barely look at you. Oh, my God. Mom.
AMBER: What are you doing? Don't hit me.
SARAH: We're playing baseball.
AMBER: Yeah, but, I mean, you don't know anything about sports.
DREW: Are you ready?
SARAH: [To Amber.] Does it matter? What's to know? You throw it, you catch it.
Adam couldn't make it.
AMBER: Why couldn't he make it?
SARAH: I don't know. He just couldn't.
AMBER: I know.
SARAH: [To Drew.] Sorry.
AMBER: It's because of me.
SARAH: [To Drew.] Did that get you on the leg?
AMBER: It was because of me.
SARAH: I don't know why it was.
AMBER: I'm sure they think that, you know, Haddie dyed her hair black because
of me too.
SARAH: Haddie dyed her hair black. I mean, what isn't your fault?
AMBER: Yeah, I know. Everything is…
DREW: Can we please not do this right now? Please.
AMBER: She dyed her hair black because she's mad at me…
SARAH: Well, I mean, then maybe you should have thought about what you did
before, you know? I mean…
AMBER: Really? You're saying this now?
SARAH: No, I'm not…
AMBER: I've talked to you about this.
SARAH: I know, I feel bad. I know, I know.
AMBER: I feel bad.
SARAH: I'm just tired of you whining about it. It's like, you know, do
something about it. We're just trying to play a nice game for a second.
AMBER: I'm just trying to live my life, you don't know what it's like…
DREW: All right, seriously, guys.
SARAH: [Louder] I've done everything I can for you guys. I've moved you back
here, and I didn't want to come here.
AMBER: Is that what this is about?
SARAH: [Still loud] No. It's one thing if you're miserable. It's another thing
if you bring us all down with you. So I'm just asking, just think one step
beyond, "Oh, this feels good." That's what I'm asking you to do!
[They all look at each other.]
AMBER: Okay.
[Amber walks off.]
SARAH: Amber.
[New Scene - Jasmine's apartment, Crosby is helping them pack.]
JASMINE: Thank you. Bye.
CROSBY: Is that the school again?
JASMINE: Yeah. A lot of red tape in New York.
CROSBY: Well, how long is it gonna take to enroll him?
KATIE: Um, I don't know. It'll...work out.
CROSBY: We need to talk about the plan.
KATIE: The plan?
CROSBY: Me and Jabbar.
KATIE: Absolutely. Yeah.
CROSBY: Like I don't want him to think that he's gonna lose me.
KATIE: Well, you'll come visit. A lot of visits.
CROSBY: Yeah, I'll visit.
JASMINE: And, um, you can have phone dates, like, every Sunday.
CROSBY: Or every day.
JASMINE: Yeah. If it's possible.
CROSBY: Jasmine, it's really important to me that you're being clear with him
about why you guys are going to New York and why I can't just move there with
you. I don't want him to think that I abandoned you guys. I want him to know
that you guys...
[New Scene - Crosby's houseboat, Zeek is outside listening to the radio and
smoking a cigar.]
ZEEK: Hey, Crosby. Pull up a chair. The game's getting good here… You talk to
Jasmine?
CROSBY: Yeah, we talked. We got a plan.
ZEEK: What is the plan?
CROSBY: The plan is they're moving to New York, and I'm gonna visit and talk to
Jabbar on the phone.
ZEEK: Well, that sounds like it's good for her.
CROSBY: [Scoffing] Yeah. Yeah, okay. I'm turning in.
ZEEK: Suit yourself.
CROSBY: You know, you got a lot of nerve giving me advice about Jasmine after
what you did to mom.
ZEEK: What?
CROSBY: What? You screwed up. Dad, you screwed up with mom. And she did
nothing.
ZEEK: Well, Crosby, it's pretty complicated.
CROSBY: Is it? Is it super-complicated? I think I can figure it out. She stood
by you for 40 years. You can't just sit here and drink beer and listen to the
radio and think she's gonna come over here and beg you to come home. Is that
what you think? You are going to lose her. Do you get that? You need to take
your own advice and fight for her. You be a man, dad.
[New Scene - Next morning, Sarah goes to the main house to talk to Amber.]
SARAH: [Outside her room.] Hey, it's your mother. I brought you some coffee.
I'm sorry about what I said, okay? You don't bring everybody down, you know?
You, you bring everybody up. Up with people. This coffee is going to bring you
up the way you bring me up when I see your sweet face every day.
[Sarah opens the door and it doesn't take her long to realize Amber has run
away.]
[New Scene - Kristina goes to open her front door at the bell rings.]
KRISTINA: Hold on a minute.
SARAH: Hey, I called, but nobody answered. Do you mind if I, uh, come in? I
just was looking for a number for Steve if you have it.
KRISTINA: I…
SARAH: Please?
KRISTINA: …think I, Steve who? Oh, Haddie's boyfriend?
SARAH: Yes Steve. Steve.
KRISTINA: Yeah, I think so. I didn't hear that you called.
SARAH: Okay, do you have the number, Kristina?
KRISTINA: Did you call my cell phone?
SARAH: Mm-hmm.
KRISTINA: Huh.
SARAH: And the house phone, but anyway.
KRISTINA: I don't…
SARAH: I'm just looking for the number, if it's not too much trouble.
KRISTINA: No, it's not too much trouble at all.
SARAH: If it's a giant problem, maybe…
KRISTINA: It's not a problem, Sarah. I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to be
polite…
SARAH: Okay just give me the number.
KRISTINA: …and kind and not say something right now that I'm gonna regret
later.
SARAH: Oh.
ADAM: Hey.
SARAH: [To Adam coming down the stairs.] Hey.
KRISTINA: Hi, honey.
ADAM: What's going on?
KRISTINA: Oh, um, I'm finding Steve's number. For Sarah.
ADAM: What do you need Steve's number for?
SARAH: Amber's missing.
[New Scene - Steve's house, Adam pounds on the front door.]
ADAM: Hi.
MARJORIE: Oh, hi, Adam. Honey, Adam Braverman's here.
ADAM: Hi, listen, sorry to bother you, but we have an urgent situation on our
hands here.
SARAH: My daughter is missing.
DALE: Who is your, uh, daughter?
ADAM: This is my sister.
SARAH: My daughter is Amber Holt.
ADAM: My niece.
MARJORIE: We don't know who Amber Holt is.
SARAH: Well, that's weird because, um, your son certainly knows who she is. [To
Steve.] Hi.
ADAM: Oh, hi, Steve.
DALE: Have you heard from Amber?
STEVE: No. I tried calling her.
DALE: Would somebody please tell me what's going on here?
SARAH: Sure, I'd love to. Um, Steve tried to pressure Haddie, my brother's
daughter, into sleeping with him…
MARJORIE: What?
SARAH: And then when she wouldn't sleep with him, he slept with my daughter
instead, and now she's missing.
MARJORIE: Wait, what are they talking about?
STEVE: I…
DALE: Steve, I want you to go upstairs.
STEVE: No, I'm not going upstairs.
MARJORIE: What's she talking about?
SARAH: Have you seen her?
STEVE: Is she all right? That's, first off, that's what we need to know.
ADAM: She's missing. Thanks for your concern.
MARJORIE: Wait a minute, could someone please tell me what's going on here?
Because it sounds like you're blaming Steve for your daughter running away…
SARAH: Oh! That's interesting. No, no one is blaming Steve. In fact, the entire
school is calling my daughter a whore, and Steve just comes up smelling like a
rose. [To Adam.] I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry…
STEVE: Can I just say something?
DALE: I told you to go upstairs.
STEVE: Dad, listen. Mrs. Holt, Mr. Braverman, I, I love your daughter.
ADAM: Oh, you do, do you?
SARAH: You love?
ADAM: I thought you loved Haddie. You've got a funny way of showing your
affection, you know that?
SARAH: Hey, hey, Adam.
ADAM: You've got both these girls feeling miserable. You are lucky you didn't
have sex with my daughter…
SARAH: Adam, Adam!
ADAM: [To Sarah.] I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
[New Scene - Driving down a street in Fresno.]
ADAM: I forget that Fresno is so industrial.
SARAH: How could you forget? You used to visit all the time.
ADAM: Oh, yeah, I know, you can't keep me away from the raisin capital of the
world.
SARAH: Oh, no, no, no. Careful. It's right up here, just pull over. Never
thought I'd hope to find the two of them together. Careful. Watch the hippie.
ADAM: All right, where should I park?
SARAH: Right over there.
ADAM: Right.
[New Scene - Stairs to Damien's apartment.]
SARAH: Isn't it beautiful? This is where my daughter wanted to live.
ADAM: This place gives me the willies.
SARAH: [Hearing the a female laughing and loud music.] Well, I think we found
them.
ADAM: Listen, Sarah, I think I should probably hang back on this one.
SARAH: What is wrong with you? You're the muscle. Man up. Cover your eyes. Come
on. [Banging on the door.] Amber! It's your moth… Oh, it's open. Okay, we're
going in on three.
ADAM: All right, okay, I'm with you.
SARAH: Okay?
ADAM: All right, yeah.
SARAH: One, two, three. [Bursting in.] It's your mother. I need you to come
home…
DAMIEN: Mrs. Braverman!
SARAH: Oh, my God. Oh, shoot. I'm so sorry.
DAMIEN: Who are you?
ADAM: Uh...
SARAH: We are so sorry. Where's Amber?
ADAM: I'm Amber's Uncle. Sorry.
SARAH: I'm really sorry.
DAMIEN: Does that look like Amber?
SARAH: This is a brand-new girl.
ADAM: Yep.
SARAH: Where's Amber?
DAMIEN: I haven't seen Amber in weeks.
SARAH: Well, that's what I wanted to know. [To the young lady.] I'm so sorry.
But, you know. You're very pretty, uh…
ADAM: Yeah.
SARAH: Okay.
ADAM: Let's go. All right.
DAMIEN: Close the door!
[Adam rushes back up the stairs.]
SARAH: Oh, really? Close the door? Oh, my God, you're the politest person I
know.
[New Scene - Night-time, driving in Adam's car.]
SARAH: Hey, Amber, it's mom again. Again. And, um, I'm just, uh, still looking
for you with Uncle Adam. Um, and I do wish you would call me, um... We stopped
by Damien's house, so that made me feel a whole lot better, but, um, somewhat
holding it together. Um, we'd love to hear from you. And, uh, and I love you.
[New Scene - Julia and Joel's house, dinner is finished but they are still
seated around the table.]
TIMM: I love that. Julie, did you make that yourself?
JULIA: Yeah. Three coffees and two teas coming in here.
TIMM: Thanks, Jules.
ZEEK: Thanks, Jules.
JULIA: Of course, dad.
ZEEK: [Pointing to Timm.] Hey. You tried to take her to Paris one time.
JOEL: Yeah, he did.
JULIA: Well, yeah, well...
TIMM: It was, uh, business-related.
JULIA: It was a long time ago.
ZEEK: So what is the deal with the two m's in Timm?
TIMM: Wow.
ZEEK: You say it twice? Timm-Timm.
TIMM: You're just coming at me…
JULIA: okay, why don't we talk about the property? [To Timm.] You were saying
something a little earlier about timing?
TIMM: Right, right, yeah.
JULIA: All right.
TIMM: Um, look, Zeek, I'm a straight shooter and I sense you are too. So I'm
just gonna, you know... This investment is a textbook example of timing and
market wrong, okay? I mean, the property's a money sucking hole. And now we
have to dig you out as best we can.
ZEEK: I see.
TIMM: Yeah. You know, you're gonna take a little haircut.
ZEEK: Really... like a buzz cut, or I gotta shave it? I had a Mohawk once.
JOEL: You have any pictures of that?
ZEEK: No, that was in Vietnam. You ever hear of Vietnam?
JULIA: Dad.
TIMM: [Too Julia.] Uh, can you pass that down?
JULIA: Let's, uh, here. Take a look at it.
TIMM: Our investment group can roll this into a securitized fund that an
entrepreneur like yourself has no access to. And the advantages of that…
ZEEK: Just give me a sec.
TIMM: Oh, yeah, yeah, fine. If I'm going too quickly for you, just, I'll, you
know…
ZEEK: Young man... Do not patronize me.
JULIA: Dad. Let's…
TIMM: I'm not trying to patronize you.
JULIA: Let's just focus.
ZEEK: Timm, Timm, Timm, Timm, Timm, Timm... I'm upset, all right? I mean, hell,
the whole world's in a toilet and a lot of people are upset.
TIMM: No, I know, believe me.
ZEEK: But, um, and this is just me being a straight shooter. Don't insult my
intelligence.
TIMM: Zeek, that is the last thing…
ZEEK: You're a businessman, right? You see an opportunity, a little weakness,
you're gonna go right in there and exploit it.
TIMM: Zeek, I…
ZEEK: And the rest is window dressing. I mean, hell, man, you're going for the
jugular.
TIMM: Zeek. That's not…
ZEEK: [Gets up an moves to stand next to Timm.] I'm not a C.E.O. of a Hedge
Fund, right? I don't own a bank, I'm just a regular guy. But you wanna know
something, Timm, with two m's? [He hits the table.] I consider myself too big
to fail! [He walks off.]
[New Scene - Back in Adam's car, they are still looking for Amber, as a police
patrol car pulls them over.]
ADAM: Oh, come on. It's that stupid taillight. [He stops one the side of the
road.] Just have everything ready.
SARAH: Okay. I'm sorry.
ADAM: I got it. Okay, just give it to me. Hi. Hi, officer. Listen, um, I'm
really sorry about that taillight, but some idiot, you know, broke it and I
haven't had a chance to fix it. But my sister's daughter is missing, and we're
out looking for her, so if you could just give us a break...
OFFICER: Yes. I'm gonna need your license and registration, please.
ADAM: All right, well, here you go. Here's my license, my registration, and here
is my insurance card.
OFFICER: All right.
ADAM: All right.
OFFICER: Back in a minute.
ADAM: All right, thank you.
SARAH: It was me.
ADAM: What?
SARAH: It was me. I... I hit your car.
ADAM: What? Why the hell wouldn't you tell me that? What the hell is wrong with
you?
SARAH: I don't know. I panicked. I, uh, I couldn't tell you one more bad thing.
ADAM: How do you expect your children to behave honorably...
SARAH: [Yelling] I didn't want to disappoint you again!
ADAM: If you don't behave honorably?
SARAH: Well, now we know where she gets it from.
ADAM: Can you just keep it down?
SARAH: Every day since this has happened, all I can think of is it was a
mistake coming here, and we should move back. [Sarah's phone rings.] Oh, my
God. [Answering it.] Amber.
AMBER: [From a pay phone.] Mom. Mom, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
SARAH: I, I, I don't even know what to say to you. Where are you?
AMBER: I don't know. I'm at a truck stop in Gilroy.
SARAH: How did you get there?
AMBER: I, I hitchhiked.
SARAH: Oh, I'm gonna kill you.
AMBER: I know, I know.
SARAH: Oh, my God.
AMBER: Mom, I know. Please, just come and get me.
SARAH: Tell me, what's the address?
AMBER: Uh, I don't know. I don't know what the address is. Um…
SARAH: [To Adam.] Oh, my God. She's at a truck stop in Gilroy.
ADAM: Okay.
AMBER: Mom, please, just come and get me.
SARAH: We're not that far from there.
OFFICER: [Returning to the car.] Have a good night.
ADAM: Thank you very much, thank you.
SARAH: She's okay, she's okay.
ADAM: Yeah? All right.
SARAH: She's okay.
ADAM: Well, let's go get her.
SARAH: Okay.
[New Scene - Adam on the phone to Kristina.]
KRISTINA: Gilroy? Honey, is she okay?
ADAM: Uh, yeah, I think so. Um, so anyway, we're on our way, but I just wanted
to let you know we're gonna probably be pretty late.
KRISTINA: No, no, no, let me, let me meet you there. I'm closer, it's, it's
easy.
ADAM: Oh, honey, you don't have to do that, we're on our way.
KRISTINA: Honey, I do have to do it. She's my niece. Haddie can watch Max. It's
not a big deal. I'll just meet you there.
ADAM: Okay.
HADDIE: Who's on the phone?
KRISTINA: It's dad. They found Amber. She's in Gilroy, or something like that.
I'm gonna go get her, okay?
HADDIE: Can I come with you?
KRISTINA: Honey, you have to stay here with Max.
HADDIE: Mom. Please.
KRISTINA: Okay. Fine. We can drop Max to grandma's house. Just grab your
jacket. We gotta go. We'll take Max to grandma's. Come on.
[New Scene - Julia clearing the last of the plates from the table.]
ZEEK: I don't believe that.
JULIA: What?
ZEEK: Your old boyfriend trying to take me to the cleaners, that's what.
JULIA: Dad. You just blew off someone that can help you.
ZEEK: Hey, you know, that wasn't a serious offer.
JULIA: That was a serious offer.
ZEEK: It was not a serious…
JULIA: He's trying to help us.
ZEEK: You know what he was doing here? I'll tell you what he was doing here. He
wants to get in your pants. That's what it's all about. I mean, I can tell.
Julie, you're gonna have to be careful.
JULIA: [Yelling] Dad! You and your stupid pride. Do you not see what you're
doing? You could lose everything. You could lose the house, you could lose mom.
Okay, I'm sorry that I'm yelling at you, but I don't wanna see that happen
because I love you!
ZEEK: Oh, no, no. Sweetheart, look. Please. Don't worry about me. I'm your
father. Now, I've been around a lot longer than you have. I'm gonna be okay.
I'm still ticking. Honey. I know what I'm doing.
JULIA: Okay.
ZEEK: [Hits the counter top.] Gah!
[New Scene - Haddie and Kristina driving to get Amber.]
HADDIE: Um, I just needed a change.
KRISTINA: Okay.
HADDIE: I mean, with my hair.
KRISTINA: I understand, I just don't, I don't underst… I mean, it's fine.
HADDIE: Just something had to change, you know? Like something had to.
KRISTINA: But, but why? I mean, why do you feel like it had to change?
HADDIE: Because, uh, I was really bored with myself. Because, like, everything
I did was predictable and was, like, this person who everybody thought they
knew.
KRISTINA: Haddie.
HADDIE: I don't know. I mean, when Amber came here, she was like... she's
really different, you know?
KRISTINA: Mm-hmm.
HADDIE: She's free and... I don't know. I hate her for what she did with Steve,
but I'm… I wanna be more like her.
KRISTINA: You're so perfect the way that you are. Why would you wanna become
somebody else? It kills me to see you... to hurt like this. When I was your
age, I was pressured into many things that I regret. By my friends, by boys,
and people that I... thought I trusted, and I don't want that for you. But I
want you to talk to me about these things always.
HADDIE: I know you know already about Steve.
KRISTINA: I do. I know.
HADDIE: I'm not ready.
KRISTINA: Mm-mm.
HADDIE: I know I'm not ready, okay?
KRISTINA: You're not ready. 15, you're not ready…
HADDIE: I know you know that.
KRISTINA: And I'm so proud of you for, for standing up for yourself and not
doing that.
HADDIE: Sorry about not telling you I was gonna dye my hair.
KRISTINA: Honey, I, I kind of like it. It's really cute.
HADDIE: Thanks.
KRISTINA: It's really cute.
HADDIE: Thanks.
[New Scene - Amber is waiting inside at the truck stop. Unrepentantly Kristina
puts up outside and Amber sees them. After a few moments Haddie goes inside and
talks to Amber, they make up. Meanwhile Adam pulls up and Sarah gets out. Using
her jacket she shields herself from the pouring rain as she watches Amber and
Haddie. Kristina pulls Sarah in under her umbrella with Adam, they watch their
kids before they all go inside.]
[New Scene - Braverman house, Amber is lying on the couch as Sarah sits next to
her.
AMBER: I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
SARAH: You just scared me so much.
AMBER: I know.
SARAH: You know... When I was your age, I slept with my cousin's boyfriend.
AMBER: Are you kidding?
SARAH: Yes. I didn't do that. I smoked and drank a lot. That's why you're so
short. [Amber giggles.] You know, you try to act so tough, but I just know who
you are, and I want you to know I see you. I see how smart you are and how
funny you are and how brave you are, and I'm just so proud of you. And I'm just
so glad that you're my kid.
AMBER: [Crying] Thanks for coming for me. I'm really glad you're my mom.
SARAH: My God, I can't take it.
ADAM: I know. We really gotta get it together.
[New Scene - Morning at Jasmine's apartment, Jabbar is eating breakfast.]
CROSBY: You know what kind of plane you're flying on today? [Jabbar shakes his
head.] A Boeing 767. There's 3 million parts on it, and it takes 800 companies
to make all those parts. And each one costs 150 million bucks.
JABBAR: How come you know so much about airplanes?
CROSBY: 'Cause I love airplanes. I have since I was a kid.
JABBAR: You're just like me, daddy.
JASMINE: Hey, sweetie. Sweetie. Finish your cereal. Uh, taxi's gonna be here
any second.
JABBAR: All right, mommy.
CROSBY: [To Jasmine.] Hey, can I talk to you?
JASMINE: Uh, yeah, yeah. Um, just finishing packing my suitcase, so...
CROSBY: Okay.
JASMINE: You'll make sure the movers don't miss anything?
CROSBY: Uh-huh.
JASMINE: And, uh, a couple of those boxes up there are fragile, so make sure
they are…
CROSBY: Right, okay. Hey, can we talk?
JASMINE: Yeah, yeah, I'm listening.
CROSBY: Okay.
JASMINE: Oh, the taxi's here.
CROSBY: You know what, he'll wait. Jasmine. Jasmine.
JASMINE: What?
CROSBY: Well, can you stop packing for one second? I hate my dad right now for
what he did to my mom. But he was a great dad. You know, he was always making
me laugh and taking me places, and he smiled every time he saw me. And he
thought I was funny, and he could never stay mad at me because he loved me so
much. And... The point I'm trying to make is I can't imagine who I would be
without him. And I want Jabbar to have that. I don't wanna be rational. I wanna
be irrational. I wanna come with you to New York right now, get in the cab, buy
a ticket, and go.
JASMINE: What about your family?
CROSBY: Jasmine, you are my family. What are you thinking right now?
JASMINE: Uh, I'm thinking that... you're a constant surprise.
[New Scene - Braverman yard, Adam and Drew are practicing throwing the
baseball.]
ADAM: Bring it outside. [To Camille.] Hey. Hey, there. Look at this kid. Like
the ghost of Catfish Hunter, ma. All right, one more time. Come on.
[Amber and Sarah come outside.]
AMBER: Hey, hey.
SARAH: Cheerleaders here.
ADAM: Pitching the Fresno fastball. It's Drew Holt.
[Zeek pulls up in his pickup truck and as the others watch he walks over to his
wife.]
ZEEK: Camille. Camille.
CAMILLE: What?
ZEEK: It's the boy's tryout.
[The rest of the family (minus Crosby) pulls up and they get out of their
cars.]
CROSBY: Well, you go to the tryout, then. I'm staying here. They can come back
after, and I'll make them lunch. They can tell me about it.
ZEEK: I'd like us to go together.
CAMILLE: Well, that's not gonna happen.
ZEEK: God damn it. Now, look, I want you back.
CAMILLE: It's not that easy. And I just have to have some room... to find out
who I am. I don't know who I am. I love being a mother. And for a good deal of
the time, I loved being a wife. But I just feel like I got swallowed up
somewhere. And that's why you did what you did. 'Cause... You looked at me and
you couldn't see me anymore.
ZEEK: I see you now.
CAMILLE: Because you're scared.
ZEEK: Camille. I wanna spend... the rest of the time that we have together
making our lives good. I'm gonna sing now.
CAMILLE: Oh, no, you're not.
ZEEK: Yeah.
CAMILLE: You are not.
ZEEK: Oh, oh, yeah.
CAMILLE: Oh, for God's sake, Zeek.
ZEEK: [Singing.] Woke up this morning, and I'm feeling fine. I got something
very special on my mind‚ there's a pretty girl in my neighborhood. Something
tells me I'm into something good. Something tells me I'm into something good.
[Camille can't help by smile.]
[New Scene - As Zeek continues to sing in the background we cut to the family
at the tryout with Drew cheering him on to him embarrassment.]
ZEEK: [Singing] She's the kind of girl who's not too and I can tell that I'm
her kind of guy‚ she danced real close to me like I knew she would. Something
tells me I'm into something good. Something tells me I'm into something good.
[Closing scene with the family walking together, Drew in the middle as Amber
and Sarah hold his arms.]
