[Opening scene - Kristina is preparing breakfast with Adam and Haddie.]

HADDIE: Mama, if you wanna sit down...

KRISTINA: Can you please go sit down? You're making me nervous...

HADDIE: I'm saying you can sit down, and I'll do the work.

KRISTINA: I need my personal space, Haddie, I'm totally fine.

HADDIE: Well, I'm here to help you, and you need to give me something to do.

KRISTINA: Do… Give your dad a hug.

ADAM: Yeah, give me a hug.

HADDIE: No. Like, I can do anything that you don't wanna do, like, take Nora to school, or...

KRISTINA: Honey, I promise you, I'm totally fine.

HADDIE: Hang out with Max, or groceries.

KRISTINA: What I want you to focus on is your makeup work, okay? You've already missed a week of class, and that's freaking me out...

HADDIE: No, a week doesn't matter. I could take a semester off, and it wouldn't matter.

KRISTINA: You're not taking a semester off.

HADDIE: Maybe I should do that.

KRISTINA: No you're not doing that, absolutely not.

ADAM: Okay, Haddie, we appreciate the offer. It's not necessary.

HADDIE: I'm not gonna take it as a "no," as a closed subject. You can't just say no.

KRISTINA: I'm gonna be fine, okay? Dr. Bedsloe is really optimistic.

HADDIE: Don't say "no." We need options for things that can happen. Semester's taken off.

ADAM: Sit down have some breakfast okay.

MAX: [Entering the room.] Haddie, why is this in my seat?

ADAM: Max, please.

HADDIE: Max, I'll pick that up because I'm helpful.

MAX: Just because you're home doesn't mean you can steal my seat.

ADAM: Okay, just a second, Max. I wanna remind you that on Wednesday, your mother and I are gonna be in the hospital all day. Grandma and grandpa are gonna drop you off, pick you up from school.

MAX: All right, tell him pick me up at 4:30, not 3:30.

ADAM: How come?

KRISTINA: Why is that?

MAX: Well, because it's gonna take them a long time to count the votes. And I wanna be there right when I'm made president.

ADAM: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. The election is on Wednesday?

KRISTINA: Max I don't know that.

ADAM: How did we not know this?

KRISTINA: We'll really...

MAX: We miss fourth period so that all the candidates can give their speeches, and I'm last up, which I think gives me an edge because I'm gonna be the last thing people hear before they go to vote.

KRISTINA: You're doing a speech?

MAX: Yes, I am.

MAX: No, I don't want this bacon now. I'm gonna get some cereal.

KRISTINA: Max did you…

ADAM: Okay, sounds like a good idea, bud.

KRISTINA: Why did you make me change the surgery date? We could've been there.

ADAM: I didn't make you change the surgery date.

KRISTINA: Yes you did.

ADAM: I did not.

[NEW SCENE - Luncheonette, Crosby enters Adam's office.]

CROSBY: Hey.

ADAM: Hey.

CROSBY: How's it goin'?

ADAM: Hey, listen. I'm just finishing up these contracts for that band Common Rotation, so all you're gonna have to do is hand them to their manager when he walks through the door, okay?

CROSBY: Okay, perfect.

ADAM: All right.

CROSBY: What else?

ADAM: Uh, nothin'. I'm just trying to get all this done because I don't wanna be obsessing about work when I'm waiting for…

CROSBY: Of course.

ADAM: …Kristina to get out of surgery, you know?

CROSBY: Right. Okay.

ADAM: [Exhales]

CROSBY: Can I help you with anything?

ADAM: No. I'm all right.

CROSBY: What's goin' on back here? [Stands behind Adam to massage his shoulders.] Mm-hmm. Yep.

ADAM: What are you doin'?

CROSBY: Well, you're carryin' a lot of stress back here.

ADAM: Yeah, I am.

CROSBY: There's like six or seven knots just right in this area right here.

ADAM: Ow!

CROSBY: It's really common for guys. They get really stressed out, and they start...

ADAM: Right, ow, okay, can you... can you... can you stop? Okay. Can you stop?

CROSBY: And then let me just get in here really quick.

ADAM: Ow!

CROSBY: You feel that?

ADAM: Crosby, God! Get off!

CROSBY: Fine! I'm just tryin' to help.

ADAM: Okay. Thank you.

CROSBY: What can I do to alleviate some of this stress for ya?

ADAM: Never touch me again. Let's start with that.

CROSBY: Okay. Uh, but seriously, is there anything I can... I can do?

ADAM: Listen, Crosby, I really appreciate it, but I've got nothing for you to do.

CROSBY: Okay, well, Julie is makin' quinoa muffins, and mom and dad are watchin' the kids, and I'm doin' nothing, so I... you know, I feel a little guilty...

ADAM: All right, listen to me. Since you offered... Otis. You could take Otis to the dog park. He's been really neglected. That'd be great. Yeah.

CROSBY: Adam, that's like a little kid favor. That's what you'd give a little kid...

ADAM: No, it's not. This is the family dog.

CROSBY: I want a man-sized favor. I wanna do something substantial for you guys.

ADAM: I don't have any... everything's covered.

CROSBY: Okay, I will take the dog to the dog park, but I wanna do at least one thing that Kristina will remember.

ADAM: I don't have anything.

CROSBY: Ooh! I overheard you telling Amber that you're gonna order her favorite takeout…

ADAM: Yeah.

CROSBY: …on the day of the surgery. Do you want me to do that? I'll order from there, and then I'll pick it up and bring it...

ADAM: You know what?

CROSBY: You just let me handle it?

ADAM: That's really thoughtful. That'd be a big help. They don't deliver. LA Bernadette.

CROSBY: LA Bernadette.

ADAM: And you gotta get us the food by 6:00, because Kristina has to finish eating by 8:00.

CROSBY: 6:00 P.M. okay. Don't even think about this again. This is all gonna happen, all right?

ADAM: Thanks, Crosby. I do appreciate it.

CROSBY: Thanks for givin' me something.

ADAM: [Exhales]

[NEW SCENE - Drew is lying on he bed listening to Rock music, "Sixteen Saltines" by Jack White through his earphones, his room is a mess. Sarah gets his attention.]

DREW: What?

SARAH: Are... are you sick?

DREW: No.

SARAH: Then why aren't you packing? It's moving day. Mark's gonna be here with the truck in, like, 20 minutes, sweetie. Let's go.

DREW: All right, well, I need more time than 20 minutes.

SARAH: You need more time? You don't have any more time. What do you need help with...

DREW: Okay, mom. I don't know how to do this. I don't know what to pack. How do I wrap this up? Isn't it all just gonna get smashed in the...

SARAH: Do you wrap... do you wrap Charlie? H-how do you wrap Charlie?

DREW: Yes.

SARAH: Honey, you just put maybe a nice little soft...

SARAH: No, but it-now...

SARAH: He'll be fine, because I'm gonna put lots...

DREW: Is it not gonna get smashed in the...?

SARAH: No, sweetie. We're not going that far. Come on.

DREW: Why are we going at all?

SARAH: The truck is by the hour, okay? I took the day off of work.

DREW: Why can't I just stay here?

SARAH: [Scoffs] Drew, we talked about this, all right? We're all gonna live together as a big, happy family...

DREW: Okay, what if I don't want to do that mom?

SARAH: Drew, remember when we came here to grandma and grandpa's, and you didn't wanna come, and it turned out to be the best thing we ever did?

DREW: Exactly, so why are we leaving?

SARAH: Trust me.

DREW: I don't wanna go.

CAMILLE: [Yelling from ouside.] Sarah! Truck's here!

SARAH: I'll be right there! [She looks outside only to see Hank getting out of his car. She Groans.] Look, honey, we'll talk about this in the car, okay? Just go as fast as you can.

DREW: All right.

[NEW SCENE - Sarah is now outside approaching Hank.]

SARAH: Hi. What are you doing here?

HANK: Hey. I know you're not sick.

SARAH: Uh, well, I'm not sick, but I... you know, I took a sick day.

HANK: It's all right. It's okay. Yeah, I'm not mad, not mad. I don't blame ya. You know, you're weirded out about the...

SARAH: Oh.

HANK: That, uh, regrettable thing that I did. I don't even wanna say it out loud, 'cause I feel like a jackass? Look, just don't quit because I was stupid, all right? Please don't.

SARAH: Oh, my God. I'm not quitting. I'm not quitting. I'm, uh... [Mark pulls up with a closed trailer hitched to his Jeep.] I'm moving. M... moving in...

HANK: Oh!

SARAH: With, uh, Mark...

MARK: [Getting out of his Jeep.] Hi.

SARAH: Hi, honey... and, uh, Drew, and... so I just took a day to move. Yeah.

MARK: How's it going?

HANK: Hi.

SARAH: We're... hi. [Mark kisses Sarah.] Hank just, uh...

HANK: I got the-you want the... you want the Dolly? I was gonna give her the Dolly to, uh, to help you move. So I don't know if you... yeah, I'll get it. I got it right in the van.

MARK: Thanks. That was nice of him.

HANK: See ya.

ZEEK: [Growls] Hey! Hey, hey! Camera guy, give me a hand with this, would ya? Don't forget to use your legs 'cause, you know, your age, your back...

HANK: Where are we goin' with it?

ZEEK: We're goin' over to this u-haul thing.

DREW: [Tossing down a garbage bag from the balcony.] There, mom, it's my clothes.

SARAH: You're kidding? [Another bag drops to the ground near Mark.] Hey, Mark. Don't... hey! Drew. Oh, my God.

[Sarah watches events in disbelief as Mark collects the bags.]

[Opening credits - featuring “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan]

[NEW SCENE - Luncheonette, front office with Amber talking to two guys.]

AMBER: All right. Looks like you guys are all set. So this is your copy. Just take it home and make sure all, like, the billing stuff and the address stuff is right, all right? Cool. All right, take it easy.

[As they leave Ryan enters, Amber doesn't see so he knocks on the wooden door frame.]

RYAN: Hey.

ADAM: Hi.

RYAN: Do you remember me?

AMBER: [Laughs] Yes. My... my grandpa's friend.

RYAN: Right. Ryan.

AMBER: Ryan, hi. Amber.

RYAN: Uh, so, this is, uh... this is the place you work?

AMBER: Yeah.

RYAN: It's, uh, it's every bit as nifty as Zeek said it was.

AMBER: Nifty. That's his favorite.

RYAN: [Imitating Zeek.] "You should go by and see where my granddaughter works. A real nifty outfit they got goin' on."

AMBER: [Laughs] Well, it is a nifty outfit. Uh, well, cool. Um... are you interested in music?

RYAN: Uh, I'm interested in you.

AMBER: Oh. That's very direct. Is that, like, a soldier thing?

RYAN: Uh, no. I'm incredibly nervous, and if I don't just cowboy up, then I'm gonna lose my nerve, so, uh... would you go out with me sometime?

AMBER: Yeah. I guess.

RYAN: Nifty.

[They both laugh a little.]

[NEW SCENE - Max's room, Kristina knocks at door.]

KRISTINA: Hey, bud. What ya doin'? [She enters and sits down.] So I just... I wanted to talk to you about tomorrow. Um, dad and I are so incredibly bummed that we're gonna miss your speech. You have no idea. The timing is…

MAX: It's okay. You couldn't vote anyway.

KRISTINA: That's true. We can't vote, but I really wanted to be there to support you. Have you thought about what you want to say to the kids? Do you have your note cards all done? Things like that? What you wanna get across...

MAX: Yep.

KRISTINA: To the student body? Great. Well, if you want, I mean, I'd love to hear it. I would love to hear it. I could give you some positive feedback, or I can just read it myself. You don't have to recite it to me in case you get nervous...

MAX: It's not written down. It's in my head. It's a speech.

KRISTINA: What's in your... you did... [Clears throat] Nothing's... you didn't write anything down at all?

MAX: Nope.

KRISTINA: Max?

[Max taps his pencil on pad.]

KRISTINA: Okay. Hey, buddy, sometimes, when you get up there, you think you have it in your head, and I know this from experience. You get a little flustered, and you see the crowd, and you may get a little nervous. And people are noisy and very rude. They don't give you the courtesy of getting your point across. So I think maybe you should write it down. So what do you say?

MAX: I don't want to talk about my speech anymore.

KRISTINA: Will you write down your notes? I can help you write them. I wrote for Bob little.

MAX: He didn't win.

KRISTINA: No, he didn't.

[NEW SCENE - Drew's new room at Mark's apartment.]

SARAH: This'll be nice, don't you think?

DREW: Yeah.

SARAH: We got some more stuff cleared out, and it's a little bigger than your room at grandma's.

DREW: Yeah.

SARAH: Do you need help unpacking? We have one dresser here.

DREW: No, I'm not unpacking. I'm just looking for a sweatshirt. I was gonna go out.

SARAH: Okay. Uh, it's our first night here, and we were sort of thinking...

MARK: [Entering the room.] Hey.

SARAH: We'd all hang out.

MARK: How's it all going?

SARAH: Good.

DREW: It's fine.

MARK: I cleaned out a drawer in the bathroom so that can be yours, and...

SARAH: We each have a drawer.

DREW: That's fine. I'll just keep it all in here.

MARK: And also, I found the drill. So if you need help hanging anything...

SARAH: Great... or taking anything down, like the gas chart.

MARK: Oh, yeah. You don't need that German gas poster. If you don't like it. If you like it, that's... that can stay.

DREW: Mom, can I borrow the car?

SARAH: Honey, it's our first night. We were gonna order some food and, you know, be together.

DREW: I already made plans, like...

SARAH: Okay.

MARK: Do you want to eat before we... we go, or...

DREW: No, we're going to eat. And don't worry about the car. I'll just get someone to pick me up. [He pushes past them.]

SARAH: Hey... Drew...

[NEW SCENE - Hallway outside the apartment.] Drew.

DREW: What, mom?

SARAH: Drew!

[Sarah shuts the apartment door.]

DREW: Someone can drive me. It's fine.

SARAH: Honey, I'm sorry if this doesn't feel good to you. It's just new, you know? You'll... it'll...

DREW: Yeah.

SARAH: Mark loves you. And... and...

DREW: All right, I mean, it has nothing to do with Mark. He's great. He's super nice. It's just... like, you pick up and move me in the middle of my senior year, and, you know, I'm gonna be moving again soon. And, it just sucks. Now I live with Mr. Cyr, like a teacher.

SARAH: He's not Mr. Cyr. He's gonna be your stepfather. And this way, when you come back from college, this will already feel like home, you know?

DREW: Okay, you didn't think about that when you first made this decision, you know.

SARAH: Yes, I did.

DREW: Now you're piecing it together but.

SARAH: I thought you would be happy. You know?

DREW: No, you literally made the decision and told me that I'm moving. Like, you didn't even think about me at all.

[He walks away.]

[NEW SCENE - Julia at home in the lounge, she is on the phone using a head set and has a calendar open on her laptop in front of her.]

JULIA: Hey. Listen, I spoke to Adam this morning. And he said that he'd prefer not to have a big crowd in the waiting room tomorrow. So I've made up a schedule for all of us. Where are you?

CROSBY: Uh, I am at the dog park being super helpful and walking Otis. I'm also picking up some pre-surgery dinner.

JULIA: Good for you. Okay, so do you want the 6:00 to 8:00 A.M. shift, the 8:00 to 10:00 A.M., or the 10:00 to noon? After 12:00, the rotation starts over.

CROSBY: Are you kidding me? Two-hour shifts? I'm not doing that.

JULIA: Well, it's what Adam wants. So which one do you want?

CROSBY: You know what? This is crap. I'm just gonna be there the entire time and they're gonna have to deal with it.

[Crosby tries to get a bag to clean up for Otis while juggling his phone and the dog leash.]

JULIA: Crosby, that's really sweet of you, but that just means I'm gonna give you whichever one Sarah doesn't want, so let me conference her in. I don't know how to do that from home, I don't think.

CROSBY: What? [Otis gets away.] No... whoa! Whoa! No, no, no, no, no, no! [Some dog yelp as Crosby looks on shocked.]

[NEW SCENE - Mark's apartment, Drew is trying to watch TV but there is nothing but static.]

MARK: Hey. Do you need help with something?

DREW: Hey, um... yeah. How does this work, exactly?

MARK: Oh! I don't... I don't have cable.

DREW: What?

MARK: Uh...

DREW: For real?

MARK: Yeah. Heh, yeah. I know, it's super lame. I had it for a little while, but I wasn't reading any of my books, and I was watching a whole bunch of nothing. So I felt like I was better off without it. But I do have a DVD player. Uh, if you want, I...

DREW: It's fine, I can just, you know, read a book, like you said.

MARK: Hey, um... if... if there's anything I can do to... to help make you more comfortable. If you need something for your room, or if you just want some more privacy.

DREW: Yeah, privacy's probably good, so...

MARK: Okay. All right, cool.

DREW: All right.

[Drew goes to his room and shuts the door.]

[NEW SCENE - Kristina is setting the table for dinner with the good plates and silverware.]

ADAM: Hey. Uh...

KRISTINA: Hey.

ADAM: Crosby called. Apparently there was some incident with Otis.

KRISTINA: What do you mean an incident with Otis? What happened?

ADAM: I'm sure he's fine, honey. Crosby said he was gonna "totes handle it," uh, but...

KRISTINA: I don't know what that means.

ADAM: Dinner might be a little late.

KRISTINA: "Totes handle it." Wait... this... okay, over here. What do you think so far?

ADAM: I think it looks great.

KRISTINA: Good, I haven't used this...

ADAM: You look really pretty. You're using the good plates.

KRISTINA: [Smiles.] Thank you. Yeah, and I'm using the good silverware we haven't used in ages, so I thought I might as well pull it out and, you know, have some fun with it. Sort of seize the moment.

ADAM: Can I give you a hand with those napkins?

KRISTINA: Nope, I got it.

ADAM: Okay.

KRISTINA: Everything's under control. I just... Want to sort of take my mind off of things. That one needs a fork, but... [sighs] So I wanted to ask you a question.

ADAM: What?

KRISTINA: Okay, well, I talked to Max about his speech.

ADAM: And?

KRISTINA: Turns out he has nothing prepared. Like, Adam, zero. He didn't write down a stinkin' thing.

ADAM: Okay. I will... I will deal with him after dinner. All right? We'll make sure he has something for tomorrow.

KRISTINA: Okay. I have another idea.

ADAM: Hmm.

KRISTINA: What if, after you check me in at the hospital, you whiz over there really quickly, and check on him, make sure he's good.

ADAM: Kristina, I can't.

KRISTINA: I am out to lunch. I'm drugged up. I'm unconscious, babe.

ADAM: I can't leave you at the hospital.

KRISTINA: You're just gonna be sitting in the waiting room, reading a magazine, so...

ADAM: Maybe my dad can go.

KRISTINA: Your dad?

ADAM: What?

KRISTINA: Lord knows what...

HADDIE: [Entering the room.] No, I'll do it.

KRISTINA: [Sighs]

ADAM: Thank you, Haddie.

KRISTINA: Thank you.

[NEW SCENE - Ryan and Amber on their date at a restaurant, they are seated at their table.]

RYAN: So how long have you been...

AMBER: So you're from... I'm sorry. You go. You go ahead.

RYAN: Uh, no, I was just gonna... how long have you worked with your uncles?

AMBER: Oh, um... Not that long. A little while. Yeah, but it's fun.

RYAN: Cool.

AMBER: Um... Before that, actually, I worked with my aunt on a... on an election.

RYAN: Oh, nice.

AMBER: Yeah, heh. Uh, we lost.

RYAN: Ah.

AMBER: But that's not the point. The journey was amazing. It was really fun and, you know, um, we just worked well together and stuff, so...

RYAN: You must be really close.

AMBER: Mmhmm.

RYAN: That's nice.

AMBER: So... What are we gonna get?

RYAN: I hope you don't feel like you had to go out on a date with me. Like, it would be rude to your grandpa or something if you said no.

AMBER: No, Ryan, I don't feel like that.

RYAN: It just kind of seems like... You're not really into it. Which is... which is totally fine.

AMBER: No. God. It's not that. Um... I think I'm feeling distracted because it's, uh, it's my aunt's, like, surgery thingy tomorrow.

RYAN: Oh.

AMBER: I was just thinking about her. And then I just realized that I think I've been not really dealing with it, and... [Crying] I actually feel kind of scared, 'cause I don't really know what's gonna happen and... I'm sorry, I'm getting emotional...

RYAN: No, here. [Handing her an napkin.]

AMBER: On our first... first date, so that's not good. I understand if this is just too heavy and you'd rather not...

RYAN: Oh, no. No, no. I mean, if you want to go home, I will take you home right now. But I... but it's not... it's not too heavy. You know, I would love to buy you a burrito and talk some more about your aunt. If that's okay.

AMBER: Really?

RYAN: Yeah. How do you know her?

[They both laugh]

AMBER: That was funny.

RYAN: What's she like?

AMBER: Ah... She's great.

[NEW SCENE - Outside Amber's apartment, as she opens the sliding door.]

AMBER: My mom's always trying to get me to get a stronger lock, but, you know, this one does the trick, so... [Sighs] Uh... Okay. Well... That was great. Thank you.

RYAN: Yeah.

AMBER: It was really helpful too.

RYAN: I'm really glad that we could get together.

AMBER: Um... Do you wanna come in?

RYAN: I-I think I better get going.

AMBER: Oh. Okay. Yeah, I mean, I... Should sleep. Because sleeping's important.

RYAN: Yeah, me too.

AMBER: So...

RYAN: Well, I'll be thinking about your aunt tomorrow. Good night.

AMBER: Good night.

[Amber goes in for the traditional kiss but Ryan puts out his hand, they shake before Ryan leaves. Amber is surprised but how the date ended.]

[NEW SCENE - Kristina, Adam and the rest of the family sit around the dinning table.]

HADDIE: Maybe we should call Uncle Crosby again.

ADAM: He said he was gonna be here in ten minutes.

HADDIE: Yeah, he said that a half hour ago.

ADAM: Haddie, he knows that your mother can't eat or drink anything after 8:00. So he'll be here.

HADDIE: Okay.

MAX: You know, if you eat something before your surgery, you can throw up in your breathing tube and then inhale it into your lungs.

ADAM: Max... Stop.

MAX: If that ever happens to you, it's 100% death rate.

ADAM: Okay, stop. Max, that's enough.

HADDIE: Great. Why would you say that?

MAX: There's no way to save them.

HADDIE: Why would you say that?

ADAM: I am gonna call Crosby.

KRISTINA: I'm gonna make myself a sandwich. This is getting kind of silly. I want them to eat, you know? 'Cause, like, they've been sitting here for so long.

ADAM: I'm sure it'll be...

MAX: Yhere's still 23 quinoi muffins in the fridge. I don't know why you guys aren't eating those. You told aunt Julia they were good.

[Kristina gets some bread but then has trouble opening the peanut paste jag.]

KRISTINA: [Whispers] Oh, come on.

[Haddie sees this.]

HADDIE: You need help? Here. I got it.

KRISTINA: Thank you.

[Haddie starts spreading it on the bread as the doorbell rings.]

MAX: [Off screen.] I'll get it. [Opens the door.] Otis! No!

CROSBY: I'm sorry, I...

MAX: What's that thing around your head? Otis!

CROSBY: I'm so sorry.

MAX: What did you do to him?

CROSBY: The wait at the vet took forever. And now I'm late with this.

MAX: Why would you let this happen.

ADAM: What the hell happened?

MAX: How could you do this?

CROSBY: It's two stitches. He said he's gonna be fine in a couple days.

MAX: He's got scars. Oh, my God.

CROSBY: I'm so sorry.

ADAM: Max, he's gonna be okay. He's gonna be okay.

CROSBY: I totally blew it. I'm sorry.

KRISTINA: You didn't blow anything.

ADAM: All right, we gotta eat. I'm gonna get this ready.

HADDIE: What do you want?

ADAM: I got it. It's all right, it's all right.

HADDIE: All right.

KRISTINA: Otis. Thank you so much for bringing everything.

CROSBY: I'm sorry.

KRISTINA: That's okay.

[Crosby hugs Kristina as Haddie watches.]

CROSBY: Do a good job tomorrow.

KRISTINA: I will. Thank you. It's gonna be okay.

[Crosby doesn't want to let go.]

[NEW SCENE - Early the next morning, Kristina is in Nora's room.]

KRISTINA: Okay. Now let's give this bunny a night-night kiss. [Gasps] Here, bunny. Night-night kiss. Mwah. [Gasps] Mwah. Now, Nora, mama's gonna put you back in, okay? Let's go night-night.

[Kiss kiss]

NORA: Mama.

KRISTINA: Mama loves you, okay?

NORA: Mommy?

[NEW SCENE - Kristina goes into Max's room. Otis is there, he whines. She leaves Max a note 'Max- You're going to do great today. I love you. Mom'.]

[NEW SCENE - Kristina goes to the kitchen, Haddie is on the phone.]

HADDIE: Right. Yeah. That's what I was thinking too. Okay. Um...

KRISTINA: Hi.

HADDIE: Great. Thanks. Then I will just talk to you later. Thank you. Bye.

[Adam enters the room.]

KRISTINA: Who were you talking to?

HADDIE: Um, to the Dean's office at Cornell. And, uh, they were actually being really helpful and really understanding.

KRISTINA: About?

HADDIE: It's the kind of situation happens a lot, actually, um...

KRISTINA: Okay, hold on a second.

HADDIE: The thing is...

KRISTINA: We've talked about this, Haddie.

HADDIE: I know, but hang on, just...

KRISTINA: You're going back to school.

HADDIE: Just hang on. Just listen. We can get the whole first semester refunded. Like, because it's a medical issue. It includes housing...

KRISTINA: [To Adam.] Can you please tell her...

ADAM: Yep.

HADDIE: And that means that I can just go into spring semester...

KRISTINA: Honey.

ADAM: Haddie...

KRISTINA: No, absolutely not.

HADDIE: It's fine.

ADAM: It's nice of you to offer, but you're staying in school.

KRISTINA: I'm going to be fine. This is a minor operation, okay? It's a very small tumor.

HADDIE: Sure.

KRISTINA: I told you what the doctor said.

HADDIE: There's, like, a lot of stuff that has to get done around here that would.

KRISTINA: I know. But I'm gonna be fine.

HADDIE: Be nice to have help with.

KRISTINA: Haddie, I am going to be fine.

ADAM: Okay, listen, you know what? We can talk about this later. They told us not to be late, honey. We gotta get going.

KRISTINA: I know, I know. I just wanted to... I'm just gonna... [Adam leaves.] okay, we'll discuss this later. Um, as for today, Max has his speech. Make sure that he wears a clean t-shirt, because he's gonna be in front of all those kids, and, like, I don't want him... [Crying] Wearing that same ratty t-shirt. It's so...

[They hug.]

HADDIE: I love you.

KRISTINA: I love you. And we're gonna be fine.

HADDIE: Mm-hmm.

KRISTINA: Okay.

HADDIE: Okay?

KRISTINA: Okay.

HADDIE: Bye.

[NEW SCENE - Rizzoli Photography, Sarah enters.]

SARAH: Hi.

HANK: Hey. What's up?

SARAH: Good morning.

HANK: How are you?

SARAH: Gettin' chilly out there. Latte, extra hot today.

HANK: Caffeine, right?

SARAH: Yes.

HANK: Double sugar?

SARAH: There's all the fixins.

HANK: Yeah. I'm gonna need that later. I feel a crash comin'.

SARAH: You do?

HANK: Ah, I'll be all right. Hey, how'd the move go?

SARAH: Good. Just, you know, moving.

HANK: How about Drew? Boy, what was up with him? I thought I was grumpy.

SARAH: [Chuckles]

HANK: He almost took a bush out there.

SARAH: Yeah, he did. We had talked about different dates, and he didn't like the one we picked, so...

HANK: What happened? You move that up on him?

SARAH: Yeah, we moved it up. Just, uh... You know, just seemed like a good time.

HANK: Hey, uh... Did... it didn't have anything to do with... with what I did, right?

SARAH: No.

HANK: Okay, good. All right. Well, that's good. You're gonna do billing today, right?

SARAH: Mmhmm.

HANK: We're gonna need some cash.

[NEW SCENE - Mark's apartment, he is doing something with the TV.]

DREW: Are you not teaching first period today?

MARK: Oh, no, Mrs. Griscom is covering my morning classes so I can wait for the cable guy.

DREW: [Chuckles] You're getting cable?

MARK: Yep. We are getting cable.

DREW: All righty, well... I gotta get the bus.

MARK: All right. Have a good one.

[NEW SCENE - Hospital, Kristina in bed in her room.]

ADAM: Well, I'm really glad we got here at the crack of dawn. It's very helpful to sit around here and think about surgery for hours. Doesn't make any sense.

KRISTINA: It's protocol, honey. I know.

ADAM: What can I get you? You want another magazine?

KRISTINA: I've read them all.

ADAM: iPhone? Wanna have a little... little tournament?

KRISTINA: [Laughs] No.

ADAM: Huh? No?

KRISTINA: You're so weird.

ADAM: I'm just trying.

KRISTINA: I know, I know. I'm just...

ADAM: I know.

KRISTINA: Thirsty.

ADAM: What are we gonna do about Haddie?

KRISTINA: She's going back to school.

ADAM: Right? Back to school.

KRISTINA: Yeah.

ADAM: All right, good.

KRISTINA: That's all. Wish we could call and find out how Max is doing.

ADAM: I'll call him later, okay?

KRISTINA: Will you text her?

ADAM: When you finish this, I'm gonna let you know what's going on.

KRISTINA: Yes.

ADAM: All right, we gotta get this moving. I'm gonna go find a nurse.

KRISTINA: I know.

NURSE: Hi.

ADAM: Hi.

NURSE: Mrs. Braverman, we're ready for you.

ADAM: And we're ready for you.

NURSE: I'll take you into the O.R. Mr. Braverman, an orderly will show you to the waiting room.

ADAM: I can't go to the O.R.?

NURSE: I'm sorry. They don't allow that.

ADAM: Oh.

KRISTINA: I thought...

NURSE: Why don't I give you two a minute?

ADAM: I guess this is it.

KRISTINA: Yeah. Okay.

ADAM: [Scoffs] I've been so impatient. Now I don't want to let you go. Kristina, you're gonna be fine.

KRISTINA: I know.

ADAM: You know that? Strong. So strong.

KRISTINA: Let's just get it done.

ADAM: I love you so much.

KRISTINA: I love you too. [They share a quick kiss.] Will you eat, please?

ADAM: I will.

KRISTINA: Eat something.

ADAM: I will. Do you want me to get you something for after? What do you want?

KRISTINA: A burger.

ADAM: Burger?

KRISTINA: Big, fat, juicy... Cheeseburger.

ADAM: All right.

KRISTINA: With cheese.

ADAM: Okay, a cheeseburger.

[NEW SCENE - A few hours later Adam and Julia are in the Hospital waiting room. Adam looks at his watch.]

JULIA: Two minutes longer than last time.

ADAM: Ah.

JULIA: You want something? They have tea and stuff over here.

ADAM: No, I'm okay.

JULIA: Okay.

ADAM: Tea. Everybody's been offering me tea. It's funny.

JULIA: It's soothing, maybe? I don't know.

ADAM: Hey, listen, I didn't really take a close look at this before. I want you to make sure to thank Cindy and Victor for me, okay? 'Cause I'll probably forget. It's nice, it's real nice. I'll make sure Kristina sees it. So thank 'em.

JULIA: I will do that. Actually, Joel made it, so I will thank him for you.

ADAM: Oh.

JULIA: Yeah.

ADAM: Nice work, Joel.

JULIA: Yes. The stay-at-home parent thing, the full-time thing... harder than I thought.

ADAM: Right, mom and dad told me you quit.

JULIA: Yeah.

ADAM: God, that's a big deal. I'm sorry I haven't called. I've just been...

JULIA: It's okay. Um... This is a big deal. So we don't have to talk about my thing.

ADAM: Ah. [Sighs, looks at his watch again, then back to Julia.] What was that, like, 45 seconds?

JULIA: Mmhmm. Little under a minute.

[NEW SCENE - Cedar Knoll Middle School Auditorium. Excited students enter and take their seats. Max is on stage with other students running for class President.]

HADDIE: You know, Max, there are actually some qualities about you that would make you a good president.

MAX: I know.

HADDIE: Like, you're super tenacious, and you're funny.

MAX: What do you mean by tenacious?

HADDIE: Um, I mean you don't give up on things. You're persistent, and if you believe in something, you follow through. And, also... You have a good memory.

MAX: Uh-huh.

HADDIE: It's like really scary good.

MAX: I know, right?

HADDIE: Do you remember your speech?

MAX: Of course I do... you just said I have a good memory.

HADDIE: Yeah. You're right. Sorry.

MAX: I'm gonna go join the other candidates now.

HADDIE: Okay. Good luck.

MAX: Yep.

HADDIE: And, Max... Um, if you... Happen to get nervous, just look at me, and I will give you a big thumbs up.

MAX: I won't get nervous.

HADDIE: Okay. If you do...

MAX: I won't.

HADDIE: All right.

[NEW SCENE - Hospital waiting room, this time Adam is with Sarah.]

DOCTOR: Is there an Adam ward?

MAN: Finally.

DOCTOR: The surgeon...

SARAH: False alarm.

ADAM: Yeah. We were here two hours before them.

MAN: Oh, thank you, doctor.

SARAH: Looks like they're getting good news.

ADAM: Yeah, well, good for them. God. I could lose my mind. [Sighs]

SARAH: Do you want some tea?

ADAM: No, I don't want tea. Why does everybody keep asking me if I want tea?

SARAH: I don't know.

ADAM: Since when have been a tea drinker? I don't like tea. I hate tea.

SARAH: I didn't know anybody else asked you if you want tea... how about coffee?

ADAM: I'm sorry. I don't want coffee either. All right? I'm sorry. [Short pause.] You know, if you could just do something to help me take my mind off it? Tell me what's going on with you.

SARAH: Really?

ADAM: Yeah. Amber, Drew, whatever. What's going on?

SARAH: Uh, okay. Um... Hank kissed me.

ADAM: The photographer Hank?

SARAH: Shuh. At work.

ADAM: What?

SARAH: Yes. I just... You never know.

ADAM: Okay, well, this is good. Give me some more.

SARAH: Really?

ADAM: What happened?

SARAH: We were in the darkroom, and we're, like, developing.

ADAM: In the darkroom? What, are you in seventh grade.

SARAH: Shut up. No.

ADAM: Did you kiss him back?

SARAH: Ew! No. I mean, not "ew," but no. I mean, I didn't recoil in horror or anything, but I...

ADAM: Do you like the guy?

SARAH: No, no, no.

ADAM: You sure?

SARAH: It just made me feel...

ADAM: There's no generation gap there.

SARAH: Yes, there is. He's way older than me. [Adam laughs.] Shut up. [Sarah pretends to punch him.]

ADAM: What?

SARAH: I don't... just... I feel weird, because it made me... Jump on the moving in with Mark thing. I mean, it didn't make me do that, but it stirred something up, I guess. And...

ADAM: Uh-huh.

SARAH: I don't know what I'm doing.

ADAM: Well, you should do what... Feels good. Life is short.

[They see Julia and Crosby enter the room.]

SARAH: Hi.

CROSBY: Hey.

JULIA: Hi. I tried to leave.

SARAH: Then what happened?

JULIA: Then I couldn't.

CROSBY: She was in the lobby when I got here. Look, I know you didn't want a full house. I'm sorry I'm early, but I love Kristina too, so I will hang out in the cafeteria or whatever, but I'm not leaving the hospital.

ADAM: Have a seat.

SARAH: [Jokingly.] I sort of wish you weren't here.

CROSBY: I understand that. Can I get you some barbecued potato chips or some tea or something?

ADAM: Tea?

JULIA: Oh...

SARAH: (Whispers) No.

CROSBY: What?

JULIA: I didn't say anything. I...

CROSBY: What happened?

[NEW SCENE - Cedar Knoll Middle School Auditorium, one of the candidates are on the stage.]

COURTNEY: So, once again, if elected student council president, I'll make sure your voice is heard here at Cedar Knoll Middle School. Thank you.

[Applause from the students.]

MAX: I'm Max Braverman.

[He adjusts the microphone. Feedback sounds can be heard. The students chatter. Haddie watches on.]

STUDENT: Shh.

MAX: I'm Max Braverman, and I'm running for student council president. If elected as president, then I will bring back the vending machines that used to be in our school. And that's why you should vote for me. [Scattered laughter and chatter as he stands there, Haddie gives him two thumbs up.] Also, I'm very tenacious. It means being very persistent. I'm like this because I have something called Asperger's. [Gets the students attention.] Having Asperger's makes some things very difficult for me, like looking people in the eye or saying hello, so I don't do those things very often. Some things also come very easily to me because I have Asperger's, like being smart and remembering almost everything. Also, it means being tenacious, and so I will be tenacious about the vending machines. Another thing about Asperger's is that I always keep my promises, so when I tell you that I will bring back the vending machines, you can believe me. Some people say that having Asperger's can sometimes be a bad thing, but I'm glad I have it, because I think it's my greatest strength.

[There is indistinct chatter from the students.]

POPULAR STUDENT: Vending machines! Hell, yeah, Max!

[Applause starts, Haddie can't believe it. The students start cheering.]

[NEW SCENE - Kristina in the recovery room, Adam is waiting by her bed. The Monitor beeping can be heard.]

KRISTINA: [Grunts]

ADAM: Kristina.

NURSE: She's gonna be nauseated for a little while.

ADAM: Okay.

KRISTINA: Ohh.

ADAM: Kristina. I'm here. I'm right here.

KRISTINA: How did it go?

ADAM: The surgery went absolutely perfectly.

KRISTINA: Honey, how did Max do?

ADAM: [Laughs]

KRISTINA: He do okay?

ADAM: He won. He won the election. [Chuckles] Honey, our son is the new President at Cedar Knoll Middle School. God help us all.

KRISTINA: These drugs are good. [Giggles] He won.

ADAM: Your son is the president.

KRISTINA: He won.

ADAM: It's every mother's dream.

KRISTINA: [Giggles]

[NEW SCENE - Drew's new room, there is a knock at door.]

SARAH: Hi.

DREW: Hey.

SARAH: Can I come in?

DREW: Mm-hmm. How's aunt Kristina?

SARAH: Uh... The surgery went well, and we need a few more days to get the results, but... They're feeling good.

DREW: That's good, at least.

SARAH: It looks nice in here. [Grunts as she tries to sit near Drew on the small couch.]

DREW: Yeah.

SARAH: Move it. Uhh. I did think about you, but I didn't think about how many times we've moved, and I didn't think about where you are in your senior year, and I didn't think about what the kids would say at school. [Sighs] So I'm sorry for all the things that I didn't think about.

DREW: [Laughs]

SARAH: If this doesn't work out, and you want to move back to grandma and grandpa's, you know, let's talk about it. Let's figure something out.

DREW: All right.

SARAH: All right? I want you to have a good senior year. Listen, um, Mark is out there watching cable. He has no idea what he's doing.

DREW: That's a big problem. I gotta get in there.

SARAH: Let's go.

DREW: That's pretty bad.

[They go into the living room where the TV can be easily heard.]

SARAH: [Laughs]

MARK: This is awesome. I'm never reading another book again.

SARAH: Great.

MARK: There's no time.

[NEW SCENE - Amber's apartment, she is playing her guitar when there is a knock at her partly open door.]

AMBER: Come in.

RYAN: Hello? Hi.

AMBER: Hi.

RYAN: Hey, I didn't know you'd be here. I was just gonna leave...

AMBER: I live here. [Laughs.]

RYAN: I was just gonna leave these here, 'cause…

AMBER: Oh. [Seeing the flowers.]

RYAN: I was thinking about your aunt today and...

AMBER: Oh, wow, well, thank you. Um, that's really nice. I'll give them to her tomorrow when she gets home from the hospital.

RYAN: No, no, um, they're not for her. Although, I don't know why I didn't think about that. But, um... and now it seems really creepy that I'm just showing up at your house, but these are for you.

AMBER: Oh, uh, they're beautiful. I'm... I'm a little confused.

RYAN: Oh.

AMBER: Just about, like, how you feel about me. Or... I don't know, I just...

RYAN: I can't stop thinking about you, since... [Exhales] That... now that sounds creepy.

AMBER: No, stop. Obviously I am thinking about you. But, you know, I mean, I don't know. I invited you in and you... you said no. And, I mean, I've never had a guy say no before. I mean, not that it's a plethora of in and out, but it's... you know, I'm just...

RYAN: No, I...

AMBER: So...

RYAN: Yeah. Listen, um, I really like you, Amber. I just... I don't wanna screw it up, so I'd... I just would like to take a little time... take it a little slow, if that's cool.

AMBER: Of course.

RYAN: Okay, cool. Well, so, then maybe I'll call you next time.

AMBER: Okay.

RYAN: All right, well, have a good night. [Leans in and kisses her on the cheek. Smiles as he leaves.] Okay.

AMBER: Thank you.

RYAN: Good night.

[NEW SCENE - Jabbar's room.]

CROSBY: All right, cowboy, off to bed. I'll wrap you up like a burrito. Hey, you know that praying thing you do?

JABBAR: Uhhuh.

CROSBY: You think you might be willing to show me how it works?

JABBAR: Okay.

CROSBY: Yeah?

JABBAR: Yeah.

CROSBY: I promise to re-burrito you.

JABBAR: Okay.

CROSBY: Oh, good, okay, I'm already on my knees. Cross my fingers like this?

JABBAR: Mm-hmm.

CROSBY: Yeah, okay.

JABBAR: You start by saying, "Dear, God." Then you talk to him like you're talking to a friend.

CROSBY: Oh, wow, that's so informal. You just, "Dear God," and then...

JABBAR: mm-hmm.

CROSBY: Okay. Um... hmm. Dear God, um, I know we don't know each other all that well, but you're really tight with my son, so... um, well, Jabbar's aunt, or my sister-in-law, has cancer...

JABBAR: He already knows that.

CROSBY: Oh, right. Oh, yeah. Okay, duh. Yeah, so if you could look out for her and... and my brother Adam, you know, it would... I'd really appreciate it.

JABBAR: Oh, and also please help. Max's dog Otis feel better and get the cone off his head.

CROSBY: Yeah. Uh, amen to that.

JABBAR: Amen.

[NEW SCENE - Doctor Bedsloe's office.]

DR. BEDSLOE: So the surgery went very well. Her margins are clear, so the cancer in your breast is gone.

KRISTINA: That...

ADAM: Good.

KRISTINA: Is amazing. I'm so thankful.

DR. BEDSLOE: And the scarring will fade away.

KRISTINA: Oh, yeah, I don't care what it looks like, as long as... as long as it's out, right?

DR. BEDSLOE: Good. Good, that's important. Uh, Kristina, unfortunately, one of the nodes that we removed has cancer. And it's just in one of the nodes, which is good.

ADAM: So it spread?

DR. BEDSLOE: What we discovered was... was very small. But it's obviously a concern. Now we also analyzed the tumor that we removed from your breast. And we found that the type of cancer you have is more aggressive than we originally thought. Your cancer is what we call Her-2/neu amplified.

ADAM: Her2-?

DR. BEDSLOE: Now Her-2/neu amplified.

KRISTINA: You just said that the cancer was gone.

DR. BEDSLOE: Yes, it just means that we need to treat the cancer differently. Now we have a treatment that has proven to be very effective.

KRISTINA: Great.

DR. BEDSLOE: And we still have a very good chance of cure.

ADAM: I'm sorry, treatment?

KRISTINA: Will it go away?

ADAM: Are you saying that she's gonna need chemotherapy?

DR. BEDSLOE: Well, obviously this is not what we wanted to see. Um, I've sent the results to your oncologist. And when you get together with him, he can go over with you more specifically your options and the timing. Let me give you my cell phone number. I know this is a lot of information to take in all at once. You call me anytime for any questions.

[The doctors voice fades out as music begins to play, “Guiltfree” by Bootstraps plays during the final scenes.]

[NEW SCENE - Haddie sits on the couch waiting as the front door opens.]

ADAM: Here you go.

HADDIE: You're back.

ADAM: Hey.

KRISTINA: Hi, honey.

HADDIE: Hi. What did the doctor say?

ADAM: Um...

KRISTINA: Everything is... do you wanna say it?

ADAM: Yeah.

KRISTINA: Everything's great.

ADAM: Cancer's gone, yep. All the margins are clear.

KRISTINA: Clean bill of health, so...

ADAM: Yep, we just have a couple follow-ups, that's it.

KRISTINA: Yeah.

HADDIE: Follow-ups for...?

ADAM: Just check-up, make sure everything's good, steady.

KRISTINA: Yeah. Just to make sure that I'm feeling better. And other than that...

ADAM: Your mother is...

KRISTINA: I am 100% cancer-free.

ADAM: Yeah. How about that?

KRISTINA: I told you, you need to stop worrying.

HADDIE: Uh-huh.

KRISTINA: And we're gonna get you back to school.

ADAM: Gotta get you a flight back to New York.

KRISTINA: Thank you for helping so much this week.

HADDIE: Can, um...

KRISTINA: Yes, you can hug me. Give me a hug.

HADDIE: Okay.

KRISTINA: Give me a hug.

HADDIE: Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

KRISTINA: I love you, kiddo.
