[Opening scene - Julia at work, worried as she looks over some papers, her cell phone rings.]

JULIA: Hi.

JOEL: [At home.] You were supposed to be here a half hour ago.

JULIA: Uh, uh, I can't...

SYDNEY: Mommy... not like that, daddy. Daddy can't do my hair right.

JOEL: What do you mean, "like that"? That's... that's supposed to be like, right?

SYDNEY: It's not messy.

JULIA: Honey, I can't make it.

JOEL: Victor, I've asked you three times to get dressed. You gotta get back upstairs and put something on right now.

VICTOR: Why can't I wear this? This is fine.

JOEL: Because I said so. [To Julia] Hey, what was that?

JULIA: I said, I'm stuck at work. I'm so sorry.

JOEL: Okay, meaning you'll meet us there.

SYDNEY: She can't meet us there. How am I supposed to get my hair done?

JOEL: I've got this. I'm talking on the phone right now.

JULIA: Meaning I am not coming. I can't come to Sydney's recital.

JOEL: Hey, hold on, hold on, honey.

VICTOR: [Returning down the stairs.] I couldn't find a shirt.

JOEL: It's been two...

VICTOR: All of them are dirty.

JOEL: She's been doing this for two months. You gotta be there.

SYDNEY: What's she saying?

JOEL: Your mom can't make it tonight. She's not gonna make it to...

SYDNEY: Wait, what? I'm the lead. This is my show. She promised she would be there.

[Julia is heart broken listening to Sydney.]

JOEL: Yes, I know. But it's not going to happen...

SYDNEY: I hate her! She's ruining everything!

JULIA: Joel, I-I-I'm just... I'm... I'm really...

JOEL: Uh, yeah, I gotta scramble. I love you. I'll see you tonight.

[NEW SCENE - Jasmine goes over the bills, Crosby is nearby in the kitchen.]

JASMINE: Crosby, $400 at Diesel? I thought I was the clotheshorse in the house.

CROSBY: Yeah, look, I... you think this happens all on its own? I gotta spend a little cheddar to look like this.

JASMINE: [Scoffs] $400 of it, though?

CROSBY: How bad is it? Let me see this.

JASMINE: It's bad.

CROSBY: Okay, well, look at this. Biscayne grill, Rigliano's restaurant, right? I'll get reimbursed for all those from Adam, so there's at least 200 bucks here that he'll pay me back for. It's not that bad.

JASMINE: Why is he paying you back? Is he... Did he lose a bet or something?

CROSBY: No, no, he always buys lunch.

JASMINE: Always? That doesn't seem fair to him.

CROSBY: Well, he makes more money, so he usually, you know, pays for the incidentals.

JASMINE: He makes more?

CROSBY: Yeah.

JASMINE: Why?

CROSBY: Because he took a big pay cut to come work at the Luncheonette. Plus he put in more seed money.

JASMINE: And you came up with the idea, and you brought in clients.

CROSBY: And he had a family when we started that, you know, I didn't, uh...

JASMINE: And now you do.

CROSBY: It's a little weird, isn't it?

JASMINE: Yeah, it is.

CROSBY: You want me to talk to him?

JASMINE: Why wouldn't you?

CROSBY: Uh, I don't know, uh, family members, money.

JASMINE: If it'll help you out, I would be happy to talk to him.

CROSBY: You'll talk to him.

JASMINE: Definitely.

CROSBY: About my paycheck.

JASMINE: I will.

CROSBY: With the company, okay.

JASMINE: I will.

CROSBY: I'll... I'll handle it.

JASMINE: Gotcha.

[NEW SCENE - Kristina is at home looking at photos on her laptop of Haddie and her new college friends. There is a knock at door.]

KRISTINA: Coming. [Opens the door.] Hey, kiddo.

AMBER: Hey.

KRISTINA: How are you?

AMBER: Good. How are you?

KRISTINA: I'm well. Good. What's up?

AMBER: Oh, well, I came because, uh, I heard that Max was... was gonna be running for the president.

BOTH: School president.

KRISTINA: Yeah. He's running for student council president.

AMBER: You know, I-I brought these, so...

KRISTINA: That is so sweet of you. You came over to help?

AMBER: Yeah.

KRISTINA: Come in, come on in. Come in. He's actually, uh... Hanging out upstairs with Guacamole, so...

AMBER: Cool.

KRISTINA: Yeah.

AMBER: Awesome. I'll, um... I'll go... I'll just go up there, I guess.

KRISTINA: Amber... Did Uncle Adam tell you something?

AMBER: [Exhales heavily] Uh... He... he didn't say much. It... you know, just that and that... I just wanted to help out and I didn't know how, so I thought maybe...

KRISTINA: Great.

AMBER: Didn't know.

KRISTINA: It's fine, okay? Just... I'm just looking at some photos of Haddie from school right now. Pretty cute stuff. She emailed me a couple of her and her buddies. Amber, come on.

AMBER: [Sighs]

KRISTINA: I'm gonna be okay. Okay?

AMBER: [Shaky whisper] Okay.

[NEW SCENE - Rizzoli Photography, Hank and Sarah are in the darkroom working.]

HANK: Okay, yeah, once it's exposed, you put it right in there. That's the, uh, developer.

SARAH: Put it all the way?

HANK: Yeah, just lay it right down. There you go. Yeah.

SARAH: Just leave it or move it?

HANK: No, no, you just leave it. So Ruby texted me again today.

SARAH: Again?

HANK: Yeah.

SARAH: Aw, that's so nice.

HANK: Yeah, her mom, uh, she's going away in, like, two weeks for a weekend, and she asked to come see me. She's actually volunteering to see me.

SARAH: That's really nice.

HANK: Yeah, so anyway, uh... Thanks.

SARAH: Me? I didn't... I didn't do anything.

HANK: Yeah, you did. Thank you.

SARAH: Wow. Well, she's great. Great kid.

HANK: Yeah.

SARAH: Hmm. [Gasps, looking at the developing photo.] Oh, my God. Look! Look, oh, it's beautiful.

[Hank leans in and kisses Sarah on the lips, they kiss for several seconds before Sarah pulls back.]

SARAH: Hank...

HANK: Yeah. Yeah.

SARAH: Hank...

HANK: Okay. Now it, uh, goes in the stop bath. Yeah, good. Good. Now it just stays here for, like, two minutes, and, uh... Good. Good job.

[Opening credits - featuring “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan]

[NEW SCENE - Julia is making breakfast at home.]

JULIA: Hi. How was the recital?

JOEL: Uh, it was good.

JULIA: Yeah.

JOEL: What, uh, what are you doing at work all night?

JULIA: Oh, God, I had to catch up on some stuff.

JOEL: Yeah?

JULIA: Yeah.

JOEL: Honey, what's going on? Did you sleep at all? You come home, and you start making pancakes. What's going on?

JULIA: I screwed up.

JOEL: What are you talking about?

JULIA: I'm l'm... I missed the deadline on turning in answers to a request for admissions.

JOEL: Okay.

JULIA: I basically forfeit this case. It's a big deal.

JOEL: Okay, well... I know they love you there, so I'm sure that it's...

JULIA: That doesn't... [Scoffs] Babe, we could lose this client. There's so much money on the line. We could get sued for malpractice, and I could lose my job. [Sydney enters the room.] Hey, sweetie. How was the recital?

SYDNEY: Fine.

JULIA: Yeah? Dad said that you were great.

SYDNEY: Uhhuh.

VICTOR: Hey, uh, will you be working late all week? 'Cause I, uh, have my first baseball game on Friday, so will you be there?

JULIA: I will definitely be there.

VICTOR: Okay, great.

SYDNEY: That's not fair.

JOEL: Syd, come on.

JULIA: Well, Sydney...

SYDNEY: Well, why didn't you work late on the night of the stupid baseball game instead of on my recital?

JOEL: Bud, that's not the way it works.

SYDNEY: You never missed my recital before.

[NEW SCENE - Adam in the bathroom, Kristina is sitting on their bed.]

ADAM: Hey, I forgot to tell you, I have a breakfast meeting. Is there any chance that you could drop off Max?

KRISTINA: You told Amber?

ADAM: Yeah, I did. I needed to let her know there was something going on 'cause I was asking her to...

KRISTINA: It's fine. I'm glad that you did. You know, I think we need to tell people. It's probably time.

ADAM: All right.

KRISTINA: [Sighs] We have to tell Haddie.

ADAM: Yep.

KRISTINA: She's just so happy there, you know?

ADAM: Yeah.

[NEW SCENE - Sarah and Mark are asleep in the guesthouse fold out bed.]

SARAH: [Gasps as she wakes.]

MARK: Mm? Hmm?

SARAH: Are you awake?

MARK: [Grunts]

SARAH: Hmm?

MARK: What time is it?

SARAH: Are you up?

MARK: Yeah.

SARAH: You're up. We're both up.

MARK: You were poking me.

SARAH: I think we should go jogging, don't you think?

[She quickly gets out of bed.]

MARK: Jogging? Why?

SARAH: I don't know. I just feel like, you know, we're the people who should be the athletic... People, you know? [Tosses Mark his runners.] Let's go jogging. Oops. [Laughs]

MARK: You wanna go right now?

SARAH: Yeah, let's go.

[NEW SCENE - Park a short time later.]

SARAH: Isn't this great?

MARK: Still kind of waking up.

SARAH: Come on. We never jogged before, and then suddenly, we jog. We're, like, a jogging couple. It's the best.

MARK: Yeah.

SARAH: [Laughs] I love us. We have the best relationship.

MARK: Uhhuh. [Panting he stops for a moment before starting off again.]

[NEW SCENE - Adam is busy working in his office at the Luncheonette, Crosby enters with a drink in hand.]

ADAM: What?

CROSBY: What?

ADAM: What... what do you want? You're pacing and staring.

CROSBY: No, I'm n... I wa... I wasn't staring. [Laughs] I'm not pacing. [He sits opposite Adam at his desk.]

ADAM: Dude, you were staring right at me...

CROSBY: I just entered a room.

ADAM: Well, if you want something, spit it out, 'cause I've got to finish this, 'cause I've got to get out of here early today.

CROSBY: Okay. [Clucks tongue]

ADAM: [Sighs] What? What do you want?

CROSBY: Okay, uh, well, I was, you know, I was just walking down the hallway, and I was thinking, you know, we're doing pretty good.

ADAM: Yeah, we're doing all right.

CROSBY: I mean, we've only been at it for a year, and we already have a few employees. We got a little extra cheddar in the bank account. That's nice.

ADAM: Yeah, a little.

CROSBY: Nice little nest egg.

ADAM: I wouldn't call it a nest egg.

CROSBY: Mm, it's pretty robust by my, uh...

ADAM: Cros, what do you want? Get to the point. What do you want?

CROSBY: I thought maybe we could chat about my salary.

ADAM: Crosby, I-I can't right now, okay?

CROSBY: What do you mean you can't? I want to talk about my salary.

ADAM: I know that. I can't...

CROSBY: When we started this, I took a pretty big cut and...

ADAM: So did I

CROSBY: It wasn't as brutal as mine.

ADAM: No, it was the same. The same amount of brutalness. We each agreed to take a 25% cut in the salaries that we had at the time. Okay, we're not doing that well.

CROSBY: Yeah, but that ended up putting you at almost twice as much as me.

ADAM: No, not at twice as much.

CROSBY: That's why I said "almost." Did you hear that part?

ADAM: Crosby, we agreed each to take 25% less than we'd been making to make this business work.

CROSBY: Yeah, I remember.

ADAM: Okay? That's what we agreed was fair. And at that time...

CROSBY: At that time, it was fair. But now I don't think it's fair.

ADAM: Crosby, I just told you, I have to get out of here early, okay? I got a lot on my plate, so just ask me later. Let me finish this.

CROSBY: I'm not gonna ask you later. I didn't want to ask you now. That was not fun. I don't want to have to do this all over again.

ADAM: All right, I'll tell you what. Let's just wait until the end of the year when we have a more comprehensive view...

CROSBY: The end of the year?

ADAM: Yeah.

CROSBY: That's when you w... okay. The end of the year.

ADAM: That's when I want to talk about that, okay?

CROSBY: Great, great. Maybe at my retirement party, we can discuss increasing my s...

[NEW SCENE - Day time outside VA centre.]

ZEEK: Hey, guys. Hey, Dwayne.

DWAYNE: Hey, what's up?

ZEEK: Aw, jeez, I'm sorry about your Giants last night.

DWAYNE: It's all good, Zeek. Too bad about your A's.

ZEEK: Oh, really? Touche, man. God. [The volunteer coordinator approaches.] Simon.

SIMON: Hey, morning, Zeek.

ZEEK: Morning. Hey, I wanted to follow up with you about a job placement for Ryan York. I... kid did a bang-up job on my sprinklers, you know what I'm saying?

SIMON: Yeah.

ZEEK: I mean, there's got to be something for him.

SIMON: York, yeah, I got him a job interview. Yeah, but... but he was a no-show.

ZEEK: What?

SIMON: He blew it off.

ZEEK: Well, maybe he got the wrong information or something.

SIMON: Maybe, but he didn't show up. Hasn't shown up here for days. Doesn't even answer his phone, man. Kid's awol.

[NEW SCENE - Adam and Kristina are video chatting with Haddie. They are at home, Haddie is in her dorm room.]

ADAM: How's that history class that you were telling me about?

HADDIE: Oh, yeah, he's actually funny. He's actually, like, really funny. I just didn't get that he was joking. He's like, makes mean jokes, and it's not, uh... Not clear at first.

ADAM: Okay.

HADDIE: But once you get him...

KRISTINA: A lot of people don't get him.

ADAM: Good, I loved history.

HADDIE: Yeah, but now, I'm in.

KRISTINA: Now you get him.

HADDIE: Mmhmm. What's up?

ADAM: Nothing.

KRISTINA: We're just glad that you're happy.

HADDIE: Yeah...

KRISTINA: Haddie, um... So it turns out, um, I-I had to go... I went to the doctor for my... for my mammogram, my yearly mammogram, and um... They found something there.

ADAM: They found a small tumor.

KRISTINA: Just small. It's so tiny. It's just miniscule. They're gonna, you know, take good care of it. I'm fine.

HADDIE: They... you... they found cancer.

KRISTINA: It is... it is cancer.

ADAM: Yes.

KRISTINA: But we have...

ADAM: Your mom's got great doctors, and her prognosis looks really good.

KRISTINA: Yeah, we found the best doctors.

ADAM: We don't want you to worry. We just wanted you to know.

HADDIE: You don't want me to worry, but you have breast cancer? Like, it's early.

KRISTINA: This happens all the time. Very early.

HADDIE: Like, they caught it early?

KRISTINA: Yes. Happens all the time to so many women, okay? You know, they're gonna go in and take it out, and so many women survive from this, and I'm gonna be one of those women.

ADAM: Yep.

KRISTINA: So...

HADDIE: Mm-hmm.

KRISTINA: Okay?

HADDIE: Yeah.

KRISTINA: Please don't... it's gonna be fine, honey. I just... I don't want you to worry. We just wanted to tell you because...

HADDIE: Yeah, I just feel like I'm really far away. I don't know... I don't know why I'm really far away from home.

KRISTINA: All right.

ADAM: We want... we want you to focus on school, okay? Don't worry about your mom. Everything's gonna be okay.

KRISTINA: And we want you to have fun and just...

HADDIE: Okay. Will you ca... like, when are you going in? Will you call me? Will you, like, tell me what's going on?

KRISTINA: We'll let you know...

ADAM: We'll keep you up-to-date.

KRISTINA: Everything, okay?

ADAM: Don't worry. You focus on yourself, okay?

HADDIE: Yeah, all right.

KRISTINA: We love you very much.

ADAM: Love you. Bye-bye.

KRISTINA: Bye, honey. [Sighs]

[NEW SCENE - Law offices, an assistant enters the room followed by Julia.]

ASSISTANT: Uh... Laura? Julia Braverman is here.

LAURA: No way. Julia Braverman!

JULIA: Hi, Laura. Wow, this is a beautiful office. Congratulations on all your success.

LAURA: Well, rumor has it you're next in line for partner over at Dengraf.

JULIA: - Well...

LAURA: That's the word on the street.

JULIA: Yeah. Thank you.

LAURA: So...

JULIA: [Clears throat] So I don't know if you've had a chance to go through all the paperwork yet.

LAURA: Julia, I know that you filed your answers to the request for admissions late.

JULIA: Exactly.

LAURA: Major screw-up. Did some first-year associate screw it up?

JULIA: Nope, it was all me.

LAURA: Oh.

JULIA: Yes, and I was wondering if there was any way that you could look the other way on this.

LAURA: Julia... [Laughs]

JULIA: Listen, all you'd have to do is say that you agreed to extend the deadline. We can file a letter with the court.

LAURA: You're asking me to look the other way and possibly cost my client hundreds of thousands of dollars?

JULIA: [Chuckles] Yes, that is... That is what I'm asking. [Awkward pause.] Okay. So I adopted a nine-year-old boy. And it has not been going smoothly, and I have not been focused at work. I'm... Begging you.

[NEW SCENE - Exterior of Ryan's apartment, a dog barks in the distance as Zeek knocks.]

RYAN: One sec. [Opens the door.] Hey.

ZEEK: Hey. May I come in?

RYAN: What is it, the sprinklers are down again or what?

ZEEK: No, no, sprinkler system's working great. Man, things are going off right on schedule. Uh, no, you just haven't been to the vet center for a few days, Ryan.

RYAN: You miss me?

ZEEK: I guess, yeah.

RYAN: Well, listen, as much as I would love to hear more stories about foxholes and 'nam, I'm trying to live my life.

ZEEK: Yeah. Well, you didn't show up for your job interview, right?

RYAN: Oh, so that's why you're here.

ZEEK: I just know that it's hard to get started again.

RYAN: No, no, I... okay, you want to know the reason why I'm not going back to the vet center? Because I'm sick of people looking at me like I'm a veteran. Like there's something wrong with me, like it's broken or something.

ZEEK: I know.

RYAN: I don't want to be a veteran. I'm just Ryan. And the reason I didn't go to the crappy job interview is because the job sucked.

ZEEK: Well, you've got to start somewhere, son.

RYAN: Okay, save it for someone who cares. Please, don't come back here, Zeek.

[NEW SCENE - Adam's office at the Luncheonette. His cell phone rings, picking it up he sits in a chair.]

ADAM: Hello.

HADDIE: Hi, dad.

ADAM: Hey. How you doing? Everything all right?

HADDIE: Mm-hmm.

ADAM: Haddie...

HADDIE: Yeah, I can't really stop thinking about mom.

ADAM: Okay, well, that's... that's normal under these circumstances. We just want you to stay positive and be strong, okay?

HADDIE: Yeah, I-I'm, like, kind of having a hard time focusing, like I should be doing something.

ADAM: Look, Haddie, we just... we just don't want you to worry. You've got to focus on your schoolwork, okay? We're... we're taking care of everything. You just don't worry.

HADDIE: Yeah. I don't have any information, and I'm really far away, and I don't know what's going on.

ADAM: You know what, everything's gonna be all right. Don't worry, and just focus on your books, okay? Give yourself a little bit of...

HADDIE: Stop, what?

ADAM: Huh?

HADDIE: What did you say?

ADAM: Focus on school? Just focus on school. Don't be looking...

HADDIE: Dad, it's, like, hard. I'm just really far away from home. I don't know what's going on, like, you didn't tell me any information. Hello? Can you treat me like an adult?

ADAM: Okay. Your mother's tumor is 1.6 centimeters, okay? So they're gonna be able to do a lumpectomy. They're gonna be able to get the tumor out without having to do a mastectomy, so that's good. And... and while they're doing the lumpectomy, they're gonna do a biopsy of two lymph nodes because that's how cancer usually spreads, so they're going to be able to tell whether your mother needs any further treatment, chemotherapy or radiation, anything like that. Okay?

HADDIE: So she might need chemo?

ADAM: I'm not saying that. She's gonna be all right. But that's the truth. That's as much as I know. That's where we're at. And I promise you I will keep you up-to-date. I don't want you in the dark.

HADDIE: Okay. How are you?

ADAM: [Laughs] You know, I'm all right. I'm hanging in there. Yep. It's scary, but I'm okay. Yep. So... You've got to know that your mother is... [Sniffs] So strong, and she's so positive, and she is doing everything she can to get healthy. And the best thing that you can do for your mom right now, Haddie, is just... you just focus on school. And you do well, and you make her proud, okay? Can you do that for me?

HADDIE: Yeah.

ADAM: Okay, good. Listen, I've got to get back to work here, but I love you, okay?

HADDIE: Mmhmm. Love you too.

ADAM: Bye. [Inhales deeply they sighs]

[NEW SCENE - Adam and Kristina telling Max in their kitchen.]

ADAM: And you understand what all that means?

MAX: Yeah, mom's got cancer.

ADAM: Okay.

KRISTINA: But I'm gonna be okay.

ADAM: She's gonna be fine.

MAX: Okay.

ADAM: But she's gonna have to go through some things, she's not gonna have. As much time for you, she's gonna need to rest, she's going to need to go to doctor's appointments.

KRISTINA: Mmhmm

ADAM: So you're just gonna have to be a little more grown up.

MAX: Okay.

KRISTINA: Do you have any questions, buddy? Do you want to ask me anything or...?

MAX: Can I watch TV now? I have 30 minutes of screen time banked from last night.

KRISTINA: [Chuckles] Sure.

[Max leaves the room.]

ADAM: Hmm.

KRISTINA: Think he cares? Think he understands?

ADAM: Yeah.

[NEW SCENE - Breakfast time, Julia in her kitchen with Victor and Sydney.]

VICTOR: Why are all these people coming to my game?

JULIA: They're not "these people," they're your family. They're... they're our family. That's why they're coming.

SYDNEY: Only grandma and grandpa came to my recital. So not fair.

VICTOR: Quit whining. Such a baby.

SYDNEY: I'm not whining!

JULIA: They're coming to the game too.

SYDNEY: You're the one that's whining.

VICTOR: You're just a baby.

JULIA: Hey, don't call her that, okay?

VICTOR: I might not even get in the game.

JULIA: You're gonna get into the game. You're…

VICTOR: I'm the worst player on the team.

JULIA: [Noticing the burning toast.] Oh, my God.

VICTOR: You gave me two knives.

SYDNEY: You need a knife.

VICTOR: There.

SYDNEY: Mom, do I even have to go to this stupid game?

JULIA: Oh… [She groans as she struggles with the toaster. The smoke alarm starts beeping.]

VICTOR: The fire alarm went off!

SYDNEY: Mom. Mom, mom, the fire alarm went off. Mom!

VICTOR: [Faintly] The eggs are burning.

SYDNEY: Mom!

[Knife scraping the toast loudly as the other voices fade out.]

SARAH: Mom, I am talking to you. Why are you not answering me?

JOEL: Guys, what is going on?

VICTOR: Mom, the eggs are burning.

SYDNEY: Mom, we're not... dad.

JOEL: Syd, Victor, go to the other room.

VICTOR: We didn't even get our breakfast...

JOEL: Now!

VICTOR: It's not fair!

JOEL: Go, go!

SYDNEY: Dad, it's not fair!

[Joel puts the burning eggs into the sink.]

JOEL: Hey, honey. You okay?

JULIA: [Hyperntililating] Uh-uh, no, I'm not all right.

JOEL: Hey, hey, hey, Julia. Hey, honey, honey. [They fall to the kitchen floor, Julia sobbing.] It's okay, it's okay. What's going on? Just breathe here, okay? Just breathe.

JULIA: [Exhales]

JOEL: Okay, all right, all right. All right, just breathe.

JULIA: [Gasping]

JOEL: Just breathe.

JULIA: I can't do it. It's too much, I can't...

JOEL: What can't you do? What?

JULIA: I can't... [Shuddering]

[NEW SCENE - Braverman house, Zeek and Camille sit together on the sunroom couch as 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' plays in the back ground.]

CAMILLE: Well, it was good that you went to see him. That was a good thing.

ZEEK: Mm. Yeah, I mean, he only slammed the door in my face.

CAMILLE: Well, at least he knew that there was someone who cared enough about him to check up on him. You know, poor kid, he's probably confused. He's certainly angry and, uh, you know, doesn't know where he belongs.

ZEEK: Yeah.

CAMILLE: It was a long time before you came back to me.

ZEEK: Well, thank God I had someone to come back to.

[NEW SCENE - Amber with Max at his house, they are working on his presidential material.]

AMBER: Why are you staring at me?

MAX: Are you a grown-up?

AMBER: Why do you ask?

MAX: Well, my parents said I need to be more grown up. So are you a grown-up?

AMBER: Well... [Sighs] I guess so, yeah.

MAX: You don't dress like a grown-up.

AMBER: No, I guess you're right, I don't.

MAX: And you're shorter than a lot of grown-ups.

AMBER: That's so true.

MAX: So what makes you a grown-up?

AMBER: [Sighs] Well, uh, let's see, I have, um... I have a job. And, um, I have a car. And I have to pay bills and just kind of do stuff on my own, I guess.

MAX: You're not married.

AMBER: No, I'm not.

MAX: All of the adults I know are married. So when are you getting married?

AMBER: Well... I guess I'd have to meet the right person first.

MAX: My mom's got cancer.

AMBER: Do you want to talk about it?

MAX: No.

AMBER: Okay.

[NEW SCENE - Rizzoli Photography, Sarah and Hank are having lunch.]

HANK: How many are there? Give me two if you can.

SARAH: Mmhmm.

HANK: Pretty good with the sticks, hmm. Just gonna start with this...

SARAH: Okay.

HANK: And see what happens. [Sighs as he sits down.]

SARAH: [Sighs also.]

HANK: It's the low sodium, yeah.

SARAH: Hank, I'm having a tough time not talking about, you know...

HANK: What?

SARAH: Look, it's like, there's only two people in this office, you know, so I can't just... you can't, like, kiss me...

HANK: Okay...

SARAH: And then I go back to Photoshop and never...

HANK: It was nothing, all right? It was nothing.

SARAH: No, I do understand... all right, it was nothing.

HANK: You got close to me.

SARAH: I got close to you? I got... oh, I got... I get it. No, I got too close. I'm sorry. That was, you know...

HANK: You didn't get too close. I just...

SARAH: Oh, close enough that your reflex is just to... Kiss me? That's... I didn't... I didn't know there was a boundary there.

HANK: It was nothing, it was...

SARAH: Oh, my God. [Laughs] You can't help yourself? I mean, I know, I'm delightful.

HANK: All right, come on, just cut it out. You're not all that, okay, so...

SARAH: What?

HANK: All right, I didn't mean that.

SARAH: I-I...

HANK: Just, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that.

SARAH: I'm not all that, yet... I mean, I understand.

HANK: I didn't mean it, all right?

SARAH: Okay, no, it's fine.

HANK: I just wanna have lunch.

SARAH: I'm not all that. That's good, 'cause now I know you have no... you don't...

HANK: Can't I just eat in peace?

SARAH: Can I just eat in peace?

HANK: Come on.

SARAH: Can I just work in the darkroom in peace? It's like, now I don't know if something's gonna happen, like if I get too in your space...

HANK: Fine, okay, it wasn't nothing.

SARAH: Well, I don't... I didn't mean... you know, I'm not... [Sighs]

HANK: It wasn't nothing. You're funny. You're pretty, you're nice... I like talking to you. And I-I know you got somebody. So let's just leave it at that, all right? Okay? Please?

SARAH: Yeah.

[NEW SCENE - Interior Ryan's apartment. There is a knock on the door, Ryan opens it.]

ZEEK: You wanna know something? You were rude to me before.

RYAN: Look, old man...

ZEEK: No, no, no, no. You're doing it again. You don't do that. You show a little respect.

RYAN: Hey, whatever you think you're doing here, whatever you think is going on here, you've got to stop, all right? I don't need your help.

ZEEK: Okay, I will tell you what I think is going on here. I think you're sitting around in your crappy little apartment having your own little pity party going on in your head, and you're not spending enough time thinking about your future, Ryan York.

RYAN: Did you just come here to analyze me? Is that why you're here?

ZEEK: No. I came here to invite you to a baseball game. You a baseball fan?

RYAN: Yeah. Yeah, the giants in town?

ZEEK: Yeah, something like that.

[NEW SCENE - suburban baseball field, there is indistinct chatter. We watch the kids warming up before we see Zeek and Ryan walking over the the Braverman clan seated in one of the small bleachers.]

ZEEK: Yeah, come here. Now there's some people here I want you to meet, all right?

RYAN: This isn't exactly what I...

ZEEK: Hey, uh, everybody, I want you to meet a real hero here.

CAMILLE: Hi. You must be Ryan.

RYAN: Hi.

CAMILLE: Hi, I'm Camille.

RYAN: Nice to meet you.

ZEEK: This is Ryan York.

CAMILLE: I'm so glad you could make it.

ZEEK: This is my son Adam.

[They shake hands, this happens for most of the introductions.]

RYAN: Hi.

ADAM: How you doing, Ryan? Adam.

RYAN: How are you?

CROSBY: Crosby.

ZEEK: That's Max. And there's my lovely daughter Sarah and her friend, Mark. Hi, Mark. And that's Drew there.

AMBER: Excuse me.

ZEEK: And that's Camille and Jabbar and Sydney and Julia and Joel, and there's Jasmine and Crosby.

CAMILLE: There's a lot of us.

JULIA: These are my kids.

ZEEK: Did I miss anybody? Oh, Amber. Amber. How could I forget Amber?

RYAN: Hi. Ryan.

AMBER: I keep the family together. How's it going?

ZEEK: Last but not least.

AMBER: Nice to meet you.

ZEEK: You have a seat. [Sits next to Amber.] And Victor's out there, so, uh, come on, sit down, make yourself at home, and have a good time. All right.

RYAN: [Sharp exhale] Yeah. [To Amber.] Hi.

AMBER: Hi.

[NEW SCENE - Short time later, the game is underway. We hear cheers and applause from the crowd.]

ZEEK: See, I don't know why the hell they're not putting Victor in the game.

JOEL: I don't know either.

ZEEK: You know, I'm thinking about going to talk to the coach.

JOEL: Zeek, do not under any circumstances talk to the coach.

ZEEK: How come?

JULIA: [Her cell phone rings] Hi.

EDEN: Did you get my texts?

JULIA: No, what?

EDEN: Dengraf is here. They're all here. He said they need to see you now.

JULIA: 20 minutes. [She hangs up and turns to Joel.] I have to go to work.

JOEL: Now?

JULIA: Yeah.

JOEL: Everything okay?

JULIA: No, I don't think it is.

JOEL: I love you.

JULIA: Love you.

ZEEK: Where the hell is she going?

JOEL: Zeek, please.

ZEEK: Jeez.

[NEW SCENE - Adam is having some alone time with Nora.]

ADAM: There we go. Can I have one? Oh, I'll take the fish. I like the fish.

NORA: [Whines]

ADAM: You wanna get one? Yeah, you get one for yourself. [Crosby walks up.] Hi.

CROSBY: Can we talk about that conversation we had the other day?

ADAM: Listen, Cros...

CROSBY: Yeah, I know you don't have time for it.

ADAM: Hold on.

CROSBY: But I need to have this, okay? Listen, it's not even about the money. It really isn't. It's about how you treat me.

ADAM: All right, Cros, can I just...

CROSBY: I'm sick of it, okay? You have this crazy family dynamic you're holding onto where you're the genius older brother and I'm the idiot younger brother, but you know what, that may work at mom and dad's at a holiday or something, but at work? When I want to talk, we're gonna talk, all right? I'm doing more than half the work right now. You've got Amber running around doing all of this crap that has nothing to do with the Luncheonette. You are acting like a jackass.

ADAM: Okay.

CROSBY: Okay?

ADAM: You're right. I'm wrong. Monday morning, we'll fix your salary. And I owe you an apology. I'm sorry. [Exhales heavily] Sweetie...

NORA: [Babbling]

ADAM: What?

NORA: Mama, mama.

ADAM: They're really close by. Do you want to give me one more?

[NEW SCENE - More cheers and applause. We see Victor still waiting to bat. We go back to the rest of the family, Adam and Nora have joined Kristina and Max.]

MAX: Are you gonna have to get chemotherapy?

KRISTINA: I don't know, buddy. I might. I'm not sure.

MAX: You know that it kills the healthy cells too, right?

KRISTINA: I'm gonna be okay, bud.

MAX: I know.

KRISTINA: Okay.

[Scattered cheers and applause]

ZEEK: Uh, excuse me, coach, can you put Victor in the game?

CAMILLE: Yeah, what about Victor?

JOEL: Guys...

ZEEK: I mean, every other kid is playing out there.

RYAN: No, he's right, he... someone should go talk to that guy.

ADAM: Come on, coach.

AMBER: Oh, my God, you fit right in.

CAMILLE: Here we go.

ADAM: Oh, this should be good.

JOEL: [Following him.] Hey, hey, come on, Zeek.

ZEEK: Yeah, hey, coach, how you doing? Zeek.

COACH FULTON: Sir, what...

ZEEK: Zeek Braverman here, hi.

COACH FULTON: You can't be on the field during the game.

ZEEK: I know the rules of baseball. I mean, come on. I also know that my grandson has been benched the entire game. There's only one out left, so I thought maybe we could have a chitchat.

COACH FULTON: It's too close to put him in. This game's too close. There'll be other games, Zeek. It's a long season.

ZEEK: Well, if you don't put him in the game now, he may not show up for the other games, all right? I mean, I got 15 members of the Braverman family sitting right there, and most of them have played on this field at one time or another. Hey, Adam, raise your hand. Raise your hand, son. He was the most valuable player in 1978. He was one of the best shortstops you ever saw. Had great hands, all right? And that kid right there, his name's Ryan York. He's just back from Afghanistan. He risked his life to make sure that we could play baseball on American soil.

MAN: We got a problem here?

ZEEK: No, I'll tell you what the problem... the prob... look, is it really about winning the game, or is it about just putting the kids in and letting them participate and, you know, feeling like they belong and just having a damn good time!

CAMILLE: [Yelling] Would you just put the kid in the game?

ZEEK: Uh, yeah, you wanna deal with that?

COACH FULTON: Victor, get your helmet on.

ZEEK: All right!

[The Braverman clan cheers and applauding, Victor gets ready to bat.]

ZEEK: All right!

JASMINE: Victor!

COACH FULTON: Please, back in the stands, sir.

ZEEK: I'm going.

COACH FULTON: Victor!

[More cheers and applause for Victor as he goes onto the field.]

JOEL: Relax like we talked about. You got this, buddy. Easy, buddy.

CAMILLE: Sock it, kiddo!

[Overlapping shouting as he swings and misses.]

ZEEK: Oh, man.

JOEL: That's all right. That's okay, that's okay.

CROSBY: Come on, Victor.

CAMILLE: Sock it, kiddo!

ADAM: Nice, easy swing, Vic.

[Swings and misses again.]

ADAM: That's all right.

JOEL: You don't have to swing at every one, buddy.

ADAM: You don't have to kill it, just meet the ball. Okay, snap those wrists. Just make contact.

[As we get ready for the third ball music starts, Edward sharpe and the Magnetic Zero “Man on Fire”.]

[Cheers and applause as Victor hits the ball, he can't believe he made contact, the fielder misses stopping the ball.]

JOEL: Yeah, yes, go! Go, go, go, go, go, go! [He starts running.] Drop the bat! Drop the bat!

[He stops at the first base before another miss field. The music keeps playing.]

JOEL: No, keep going, keep going! Go, go, go, go! Go!

[The Braverman's cheer Victor on to a home run. Sarah taking photos. Everyone on his team is happy.]

[NEW SCENE - Julia sits in the boardroom alone before her bosses enter.]

JULIA: [Clears throat] Leon, I apologize I missed your phone call...

DENGRAF: Have a seat, Julia.

[They all sit, her bosses opposite Julia at the imposing boardroom table.]

DENGRAF: [Clears throat] Where have you been?

JULIA: I was at my son's baseball game. I'm sorry. My phone was in my purse...

DENGRAF: Not this morning. The last six months, Julia.

JULIA: Um, if this is about the request for admissions, I spoke to opposing council, and...

DENGRAF: It didn't work. They filed a motion to deem, and the court's gonna grant it. It's over. Julia, what the hell happened to you? Where have you been? Your hours have been dismal, and now you miss a discovery deadline?

JULIA: Leon, I'm sorry. I-I will make this up.

PROSSLER: Do you have any idea what this is costing this firm? Client's threatening to walk. This is a multi-million-dollar screw-up. Two years ago, this wouldn't have happened. A year ago, this wouldn't have happened. This is rookie crap.

JULIA: You're right. I-I-I apologize.

DENGRAF: What we're trying to say, Julia, is you were on a partner track.

JULIA: I was?

DENGRAF: You need to tell us right now that this will never happen again, and you need to tell us that you want this job, that your focus is 100% on your clients. [A pause as she thinks.] Julia.

JULIA: I don't think that it is. I-I don't think that I am 100% committed.

PROSSLER: Julia.

JULIA: I thought that I could do it all, but I can't. Not now, anyway. Thank you for these last nine years, Leon. I quit.

[NEW SCENE - Pizza Parlor, the Family are celebrating Victors first game, spread out across several tables. Max is with Joel, Victor and Jabbar.]

MAX: So right now, your batting average is 100%, but for some reason in baseball, they call it batting a thousand. Now, but your slugging percentage is only .333, but it's a lot better than mine still 'cause my batting average lifetime was .147, but now I'm retired.

VICTOR: Sweet.

JOEL: Mm-hmm.

VICTOR: So, uh, maybe we could have, like, a game of catch one day.

MAX: Yeah, why not?

VICTOR: It'd be pretty cool.

[NEW SCENE - Ryan and Amber are at the drinks machines.]

RYAN: What do you think?

AMBER: You can feel free to mix and match, you know. We like those kind of wacky potions.

RYAN: Okay.

AMBER: I'm goin' straight orange on this, though.

RYAN: All right, so I'm gonna take the fall for the concoction, okay.

AMBER: [Laughing] Yes. Exactly.

RYAN: So what do you do, Amber?

AMBER: Uh, well, my uncles own a recording studio in the Haight, so I work there.

RYAN: Cool.

AMBER: So you were in Afghanistan, right?

RYAN: Yeah. I'm back.

AMBER: Welcome back.

RYAN: Thanks.

AMBER: Ready?

RYAN: Yeah, yeah.

[NEW SCENE - Sarah and Mark at a table. "Shed Their Fear" Yael Meyer plays in the background.]

SARAH: Let's move in together.

MARK: Really?

SARAH: Yeah.

MARK: Well, what about, um, the plan, waiting for Drew to graduate, and...

SARAH: Why... you know, why wait? Let's do this thing.

MARK: Let's do this thing. All right, yeah.

SARAH: You think?

MARK: Yeah? I like that idea a lot.

SARAH: Good.

[Indistinct chatter as Kristina looks around at the family. One by one they turn to see Haddie entering the Pizza Parlor.]

MARK: Look who's here.

SARAH: Oh, my God!

HADDIE: Hi.

KRISTINA: What are you doing here? Did any of you guys know she was coming?

[They hug.]

SARAH: Yay.

[Applause]

HADDIE: [To Nora] Hey, hey, hey. Hi, hi.

KRISTINA: What are you doing here?

HADDIE: I just... I had to come.

ADAM: That's awful nice of you.

KRISTINA: Ah, it's so good to see you. [To Adam.] Did you know?

ADAM: No. No, I didn't know.

KRISTINA: [To Amber.] Hey, um, honey, can you take the kids to play video... games?

AMBER: Um, hey, you wanna go to the arcade? Come on, it'll be fun. Come on, guys. Let's arcade it up. Let's go play some games. Arcade.

KRISTINA: I love you all so much. I just wanna say that, um... and there's something that I need to tell you. [Exhales]

[The music rises as Kristina tells the family she has cancer, we see the families reaction as they take it in turns to hug Kristina.]
